From the Head of Sport

It is with great happiness that we welcome back our Year 11 and 12 students to school this week. We know that the lockdown has presented different challenges for everyone and we hope that as we work hard to approach a return to “normality”, our students are also eager to return to school.

Last week the AIC Heads of College met to discuss a range of options discussed by the Heads of Sport for our return to sport in Term 3. As usual, all of these decisions are guided by clear advice and direction from the Australian and Queensland Governments and medical authorities. As you are all aware, last week’s National Cabinet meeting outlined a three-step plan for Australia’s recovery from COVID-19 and from this our Queensland government produced their plan specific to our State.  For sport, these are the guidelines that AIC will adhere to in our return and there is a clear outline for what steps we need to follow.

Based on current trends, we are confident there will be some sporting activities offered for our students following our June/July holidays which is very positive. The finer details are still yet to be confirmed and the AIC committee will continue to finalise these plans. We are pleased to say that we have already established our own plans for a return to sport here at Marist College Ashgrove and once this is all decided we will release further details to our communities.

With our return happening very soon, it is important that all students continue the development of their fitness or find the time to begin their programs now.

Skill Programs

We continue to provide basic programs for skill and fitness development that our students can and should be doing at home. The focus has been on the sports that were to occur in Term 2 and we will look to expand this in the next few weeks as our calendar is confirmed.

Something is always better than nothing so get active!

See later in The Buzz for some great ideas to help you get active.

I would like to sincerely thank all of the students and staff involved in developing these programs over the past few weeks. There has been a lot of time and effort dedicated to this from the sport department during our isolation and we thank everyone involved.

Cross Country / Track and Field

These are two sports which now have confirmed dates in place for the AIC championships. They are able to plan their preparation with a date in mind and as defending champions, in both sports we know our students will be eager to train hard and defend their titles.

  • AIC Cross Country Championships - Tuesday August 11 (Term 3, Week 5)
  • AIC Track & Field Championships - Friday October 9 and Saturday October 10 (Term 4, Week 1)
