Grade 3/4 Camp Report

Last week 3/4 students went to Lady Northcote Camp near Bacchus Marsh. Students participated in a range of activities including: yabbying, flying fox, mountain biking, giant swing, frisbee golf, team toon challenge and more! Students had a great experience and represented our school well.

Let’s here from some of the campers!

“Camp was amazing because it had lots of challenging activities. I am afraid of heights but I still went on the giant swing” - Cailin

“I enjoyed yabbying and the giant swing. I caught 18 yabbies! My group caught a total of 53. I loved the food” - Sebastian

“Camp was really, really fun. My favourite activity was yabbying because we caught lots of yabbies that we were able to hold. The giant swing was fun because we went really high” - Wilfred

“Camp was really fun because there were lots of challenging activities. I liked giving my best during all of the activities. Yabbying was really fun because I was able to catch my own yabbies and help others” - Cassidy

“I liked going on camp because there were so many fun activities. My favourite activities were yabbying and the giant swing. I was impressed that so many people had a go at the giant swing” - Pete

A big thank you to Mrs Schwuch, Mrs O’Mealley and Miss Wojcik for attending and assisting with camp.

Science

The 3 and 4 students have had a busy and productive year in Science, investigating the characteristics of soil, compost and its critters, compost food chains and food webs.  They learnt about forces and how they impact us when we ride a bike.  Students learnt basic bike maintenance and donated bikes to charity.  They have learnt what heat is and kept records of temperature changes in our compost, hothouse and aquaponics system.

The students have done experiments, set up worm farms, completed the Aussie Backyard Bird Count, raced in Recycling Relays, cared for fish and plants, and shown interest and excitement in their learning.

What a year!!  Congrats to all our 3+4 Scientists.

This year has been flat out for our 5 and 6 classes.  The senior classes have investigated our garden soils and how they impact plants growth; light and shadow, reflection and refraction; adaptations and survival; and Aquaponics and Chemistry.

They have constructed models, kaleidoscopes, periscopes and rainbows.  They have conducted experiments on soil colour, water holding capacity and pH. They have used microscope to view materials and made their own slides.  They have cared for plants and animals, and ran markets of beautiful produce for us all to enjoy.

Some highlights included the first place at the Royal Melbourne Show for our amazing chickens, the donation and planting of native grasses to attract small birds thanks to Barwon Water, and the introduction of our new Aquaponics System.

Good luck to our grade 6 students and their future in Science!
