Prep News

We're exploring the theme of community this term, including learning about our friends in our class community through 'Me Box' presentations. We enjoyed our special visit from volunteer firefighters from Mooroolbark CFA (thanks to Dean, an RHPS parent for organising!).

Our "fire safe kids" certificates show that we learnt about:

- calling 000 in an emergency

- if there's smoke, we 'get down low and go go go!'

- "stop, drop and roll!"

- we meet our family at the letterbox if we need to evacuate the house

Have you had a chat with your family about other ways to stay safe?

Knowing their street address is really helpful if children are seeking help from  emergency services.

Does your child know their address?

Home Reading Reminder in 1/2 T

Students in Level 1/2 are getting into the habit of independently changing their take home books each day. Students are looking forward to achieving certificates for 25, 50, 75 and 100 days (and beyond!) of reading this year. Please remember to help them log their books each day so we can start handing out certificates in class.

We have a Boorai full of boxes!

Thank you to the many parents and families that have donated and sent in boxes for our upcoming Inquiry project. Students have been planning their communities and thinking about what places and spaces they will build and include. We have been discussing, and considering, the importance and location of places such as hospitals, police stations and fire stations in our communities and what other services are vital to keep our community safe and healthy.

3/4 News

We hope that you all had a fantastic long weekend and have been able to relax and enjoy some family time. We are only three weeks from the end of a very busy term and the students are engaged in their learning and applying their new skills.

In reading, we have been focusing on making thoughtful connections to our reading to help us to understand a variety of texts and make deeper connections with them. Please encourage your child to read regularly at home and take time to discuss the text with them.

In writing, we have been focusing on forming opinions and persuading people to agree with our point of view. We have been using a variety of persuasive devices, such as emotive language and rhetorical questions to support our ideas.

In Maths, we have been increasing our understanding of ‘Measurement’ and our ability to use a variety of tools to measure accurately. We have completed some hands on investigations which focused on measuring length, mass, capacity, area and perimeter.

In our inquiry unit ‘First Contact,’ students are enjoying learning more about Australian history and the First Fleet. They are now preparing to design a European artefact and a First People’s artefact to demonstrate their learning. If you have any useful design materials at home such as cardboard, sack cloths or hessian, we would be really grateful.

We have had an excellent response to the Healesville Sanctuary learning experience and the students are excited about their visit. This is just a quick reminder to consent and pay for your child to attend on Compass, if you have not already done so. Don’t forget 3/4M will be presenting assembly this Friday, hope to see you there. Have a great weekend everyone!

5/6 News

Over the past week the Level 5/6 students have been continuing on with a number of awesome learning opportunities. They are in the process of writing a Persuasive piece about ‘Something Worth Fighting For!’ This will lead into their Learning task where students are required to plan and write a persuasive text, presenting their opinion on why they should be the next Prime Minister of Australia. They are expected to use appropriate text structure, grammar, word choice, spelling and punctuation, and revise and edit their work.

The students have also formed Inquiry groups and will be working hard over the next few weeks to come up with a ‘School Improvement’ idea to share with the level. Within their political party groups, they have chosen a Group Leader, a Deputy Leader, and given roles out such as speech writer and logo designer. Speeches will be delivered by group leaders and a preferential vote will be run in the final week of term to find which idea was the winner (watch this space for photos!)
