Around the Campuses

Budget Night & Pizza was a hit!

On Budget night (Tuesday 9 May) the Year 11 Economics class gathered in the staffroom to watch the Treasurer's 7.30pm budget speech, while having a pizza dinner. The budget is an economics highlight because it sets out the Commonwealth government's forecasts of key economic indicators (such as inflation, unemployment and interest rates), as well as the Commonwealth government's major revenue-raising and expenditure proposals. It is a great opportunity for students to use the concepts that they have learned in class to analyse the state of the economy and the government's budgetary policies. As Aaron Dado said: I took home a lot of insight regarding the Australian budget which became a decent conversation starter for my family and friends. I enjoyed the time to learn something new without the pressure of needing to fully grasp the content for a SAC or exam".

VCE Students experienced the world of law

In the second week of the Term 1 break, four Year 12 Legal Studies students undertook work experience at Allens, one of Australia’s leading commercial law firms.

The highlights included meeting with a Supreme Court judge and participating in a mock trial, sitting in on a murder trial, working with Allens lawyers to write first-class resumes and getting practical experience in being interviewed for a job. This initiative is part of the Allens Spark program, which is designed to introduce students to careers in the law, as well as to assist students to develop insights and skills that are useful for employment in any professional services business.

As one of the students, Diego Murillo, said: My experience at Allens was a wonderful time, the people there were so kind and treated us with respect. They also gave us a great insight into how lawyers live their lives, which is very different from what’s shown on the dramatized versions of their lives on TV.

Interschool Sports

Late last term, the Year 9/10 Intermediate Volleyball teams did so well against the other schools. It wasn't an easy battle and both teams fought hard. Despite their efforts, the Boys Team didn't make it, however the Intermediate Girls Team have taken it once again and 2 years running have been crowned Keilor Division Champions!  Well done to both Teams, especially the girls!

Harmony Day

On Monday 3rd April, Harmony Day was celebrated at both campuses with lunch time activities, a BBQ, singing and dancing! Harmony Day is a uniquely Australian celebration which promotes harmony and unity among all cultures. Students were encouraged to come in their cultural clothes or wear orange to show their support. Over $1000 was raised for State Schools Relief, who provide essential uniform and school supplies to families in hardship.

Students really enjoyed the music and the dancing, as well as seeing costumes from different cultures. Mr Steyer's Martial Arts class at the Junior Campus was a highlight!

Below is one student's thoughts about the day:

Harmony Day was a blast! The SRC team organised lunch time activities, which included guessing how many lollies in the jar, a friendship chain, a sausage sizzle, and many more. There were students performing, and personally, I loved each and every one! By looking at the crowd surrounding the performers, I assume that I'm not the only one who enjoyed it! The atmosphere at school was breathtaking. There were people dressed in their cultural clothes, and everyone looked magnificent. The bond between the students was incredible, because you would hear peers complimenting and acknowledging each others'  backgrounds and cultures. In addition, I heard people who attended the martial arts lesson instructed by Mr Steyer say they had so much fun, this makes me want to attend the lesson next year!

VCE Legal Studies Excursion

In March, 40 Year 11 and 12 Legal Studies students went on an excursion to the city. Students had a guided tour of the Victorian Parliament, where they sat in both the Legislative Assembly and the Legislative Council while they learned a number of interesting facts about the operation of the parliament. Allens, a large commercial law firm, hosted the students for lunch, and a panel of lawyers and non-lawyers talked to the students about life in a law firm and answered the many questions that the students had. Students also went on a tour of the law firm offices. During the course of the day the students competed in a hotly contested Legal Studies treasure hunt where they were divided into groups, given a map of places of legal significance in the city, and had to take selfies of themselves at each of these places. The winning team was the Parliamentary Princesses, who scored the highest number of points and were rewarded with a lot of chocolate!
