Spotlight on Learning

Stage 1

After a well-deserved break, the students in 2J came back to school with lots of energy and excitement for the new term. They spent the first few days diving into a new storybook called "Nian the Chinese New Year Dragon" and had fun drawing their own dragons and creating unique settings for their stories. In class, they also learned how to use noun groups to make their writing more descriptive. Such as:

‘The scaly green dragon flew over the icy cold mountain’.

‘The fearsome dragon flew into the dark, dangerous cave’.

'The red, lucky dragon flew around the small village’.

Their favourite activity, however, was certainly drawing the face of a dragon. Everyone was thrilled with the result.

During math class, the students learned about equivalence, which is when one side of a number sentence is equal to the other side. They learned that the equals sign means "the same as" and can be used to show equivalence. Even if representations look different, they can still be equivalent. The students used a virtual arm balance to explore this idea and worked together to record their findings on whiteboards.

Stage 2

During the first week of Term 2, students in 3S picked up right where they left off last term with their learning. As a class, we began by revising fractions, comparing halves, thirds, quarters, and fifths using the 'fraction kit' we made at the end of Term 1. Next, we revisited the concept of 'Area' by calculating the area of our hands using the strategies we learned in Term 1. Some students used multiplication facts, while others employed jump and skip counting strategies. The students had a blast designing their own 'Area Robots' using square centimeter grid paper. They even took the time to appreciate each other's work by walking around the room and calculating the area of their friends' Area Robots. It's truly delightful to see the 3S students developing into competent mathematicians with a love for learning.

Stage 3

After a two week holiday, Year 6 students were recharged and ready to start Term 2. The focus in Mathematics for the first week was on how to collect and analyse data, and how to present their findings using various graphical representations.

To start off their learning journey, students were given an interactive task of collecting data on their classmates' favourite pizza toppings. They learned how to create a tally chart and then used the information collected to create a bar graph. This activity helped them understand the importance of collecting accurate data and how to present it in a visually appealing way.

Year 6 students also got the opportunity to collect data on the different coloured cars in the staff carpark. They thoroughly enjoyed this practical activity and were able to identify the most popular colour choices of the teachers at Roselea.
