John XXIII Rowing Club

Dear Families

Last Saturday, 6 May our female rowers competed in the first IGSSA regatta of the season. Unfortunately, due to the windy conditions, some races had to be cancelled to ensure the safety of the rowers.  The new abbreviated race draw featured our Senior Girls Eight, Year 10 Eight, and a Freshman Eight (Year 9s).

Congratulations to all the girls for braving some challenging conditions and making the most of the opportunity despite the cancellation of the small boat events.

This Saturday, our girls will be racing in IGSSA Regatta 2, hosted by Methodist Ladies College. We wish all of our rowers the best for their respective races!

Boat Christening

On Saturday 20 May, we will be blessing our brand new Quadruple Scull.  This new boat has been named after Patrick Boere (Class 2014). Patrick is a current staff member in the College Audio Visual team and has represented the state and Australia in rowing. We are very excited to honour Patrick with a boat named after his fantastic achievements in rowing after school as well as his ongoing contributions to the College.

The rowing community raised $23,651 from the Head of the River last year, which includes stalls on the day and merchandise, as well as $4,883 from the Bogan Bingo fundraiser held in 2021, for a total of $28,534.  This has allowed us to also purchase a brand-new set of oars to go with our new boat.

This new addition to our fleet is a great testament to the tremendous effort and passion of all the committee members, parent helpers, and rowers over the past two years. It makes me very proud and grateful for all the hard work and commitment from our community.  I’m sure that the new quad will be a symbol of what we can achieve when we pull together, on and off the water!

We invite all members of the rowing community to attend the new boat blessing.

When: Saturday 20 May

Time: 11am

Where: John XXIII Boatshed, 4 The Esplanade Mount Pleasant

Following the christening, all attendees are welcome to go upstairs for a drink at The Rowing Pavilion.

Stack Team App

Just a reminder, if you haven’t already, please download the ‘Stack Team App’ on your phone as this is the central place for rowing information, including schedules, training updates, and access to the rowing handbook. It is important that all rowers and parents have access.

Go to the App Store or Google Play and download Stack Team App onto your mobile device, then follow these simple steps:

  • Sign-up to Stack Team App. You’ll be sent an email to confirm your registration.
  • Log-in and search for JTCRC, then request to become a member.

Asthma and Allergies

All rowers with asthma or allergies are reminded to bring asthma puffers, EpiPens or required medication to all sessions.

Diamond Fitness

We are very excited to have Diamond Fitness returning from next week to deliver a Strength and Conditioning program specific to rowing. To get the most out of this program, Diamond Fitness have requested that they coach our Year 10 to 12 Rowers in groups no larger than 15.  This will allow them to teach good form and movement patterns which the rowers will learn for life beyond school.

To accommodate this, the boys' Wednesday morning session will run from 6am-8am, with the group split into two smaller groups rotating between the Erg session and Strength & Conditioning session. Years 10 to 12 boys will then have Wednesday afternoon off.
