Reminder to students in Years 3 to 6 to keep reading over the school holidays. You need fifteen books to complete the Reading Challenge. Ten books must be from the Reading Challenge booklist and five books can be free choice. The booklist and further information regarding the Reading Challenge can be found at https://www.vic.gov.au/premiers-reading-challenge. There are hundreds of books to choose from so enjoy your reading and don’t forget to keep a record of the title and author of the book so that it can be entered onto the website.

Students in Foundation, Year 1 and Year 2 are sharing 30 books with their teachers.

HAPPY EASTER

Every year I come across new releases in particular themes. This year’s Easter picture book new releases are colourful and fun with a bit of humour thrown in. Try Bin Chicken’s Eggcellent Easter by Kate and Jol Temple. Lots of mayhem in the backyard during the annual Easter egg hunt. Ibis is collecting all the eggs and is shocked to find out that they aren’t real eggs at all! Its chocolate shaped like a rugby ball!

Hot Cross Bunny by Stephanie Thatcher.  We’ve all seen that face! As long as Basil the sweetest, fluffiest most adorable bunny you ever saw gets his own way, all is well. However sometimes things don’t always turn out that way!

And two books written and illustrated by Jonathan Bentley titled Bad Bunny and Bad Bunny and the Beasties. The front covers are sure to capture your attention because as the blurb says ‘Good bunnies are so boring!” Bad Bunny says “I like to play tricks, I put spicy sauce on vegetables and bathe myself in slime, that’s why they call me Bad Bunny!” There’s a great lesson in these books about not judging “Bad Bunny” too harshly especially when Sly Fox comes to play!

STUDENT LOANS

A quick reminder to all students and parents that you can check Oliver v5 at any time to see the books you have on loan. You’re also able to download eBooks and audiobooks through Oliver v5 via Compass. Oliver revision sessions with the Years 3 to 6 classes were completed earlier in the term and students should be familiar with the system. Please have a look for any books that are overdue and return them to school next term.

Overdue lists were given to teachers last week and we are asking students to let us know if they have lost their books so that we can finalise the process. It is never too late to return overdue books, class readers, novels from class sets – in fact anything with a Rowville Primary School stamp on it! If you have any enquiries about missing books please contact your teacher or myself. We are here to help.

INTERNATIONAL CHILDREN’S BOOK DAY

Every year The International Board on Books for Young Children (IBBY) celebrate International Children's Book Day. It is celebrated around the world on 2 April and encourages us all to embrace children’s literature and inspire a love of reading. This day was selected by IBBY as it is the birthday of Hans Christian Andersen (1805–1875). Hans Christian Andersen’s fairy tales are still in print and enjoyed all over the world. Many of his stories resonate with children. They create wonder and let our imaginations take us to other places. He has written many fairy tales including The Little Mermaid, Thumberlina, The Emperor’s New Clothes, The Snow Queen and one of my favourites The Ugly Duckling

I encourage everyone to enjoy reading children’s books and as Dr. Seuss once said “you’re never too old, too wacky, too wild, to pick up a book and read to a child.”

Enjoy Easter and the school holidays and keep reading everyone!
