Captains Attend Student Leadership Program

Our Captains, Jaia Richardson-Fowell, Annabel Winter, Charlotte Charteris & Henry Sindel attended a Student Leadership Program in Sydney this week.

They were so very pleased to be welcomed and hosted by the Member for Northern Tablelands Adam Marshall and valued the time he spent with them during the day, showing them around and answering their many questions.

Later, the group went to Government House, met with NSW Governor Margaret Beazley and attended a reception event.

An exceptional opportunity indeed for our young leaders who proudly represented our school.

Appreciation and thanks to Mr Howey who accompanied the group on their trip.

Science School Award

Congratulations to Adam Lucas (yr 12) who has been awarded a scholarship and invitation to attend the University of Sydney International Science School.

Adam is one of 90 students from across the country who will attend the Science School which will be held for 2 weeks in the July holidays.

Adam's family extend appreciation to Science Head Teacher, Mr Crompton for his support.

This is indeed a fantastic achievement and exciting opportunity. Well done Adam!

Stage 6 Debating

Our Stage 6 Debating team undertook a debating road trip of the North Coast. Our team had a win at Great Lakes Senior College arguing against 'That the casts of Australian films and TV shows should be required to reflect the racial diversity of the population'.

The second day the team competed against Nambucca Heads and won the debate: ‘That the government should prioritise domestic welfare over foreign aid’, arguing as the negative.

The road trip was a valuable learning opportunity for the team and the students enjoyed the challenge.

A big thank you to Deb Carrall and the GLC debating team for their warm welcome and hospitality!

Geography

Students from Armidale Secondary College took part in the 25th annual Australian Geography Competition towards the end of Term one.

Over 71,000 students from around Australia entered the Competition, which is a joint initiative of the Australian Geography Teachers’ Association and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland.

Competition Coordinator, Bernard Fitzpatrick, said that the Competition gives teachers an opportunity to highlight Geography in their schools and challenge their students.

“With current international affairs, Geography is a vital subject that all young people should study. Understanding place and people, and the socio-economic and environmental interactions at local, regional, national and international scales is important to the economic and environmental future of Australia,” said Mr Fitzpatrick.

“With the Australian Curriculum: Geography implemented nationally, it’s an exciting time to be involved in geographical education, and the Competition plays its part in this,” said Mr Fitzpatrick.

Mr David Partridge, a Geography teacher at our school, said students from former Armidale and Duval High Schools usually did well in the Australian Geography Competition. In 2018, Duval had two students placed in the top 1% Australia wide. In addition to this, the schools usually had quite a few students that were awarded high distinctions and distinctions.

Reggie the Wedgie

Our school mascot has a name:  "Reggie the Wedgie"!

Mrs Lewis's Year 8 CREW class were the winners of the name nomination.  The name suggestions were numerous and very clever, resulting in a tough and close voting outcome.

We look forward to seeing Reggie the Wedgie at many school events in future.

ANZAC Parade

Our school once again joined our community in the ANZAC Parade and Remembrance Service. The captains laid a wreath and Henry Sindel read a prayer in the Service.

Thank you to all students and staff who contributed to the day.
