Term 4 Career News

Its been a busy start to the term we have already begun planning for exciting events in 2020.

Year 10:

Currently in career classes students are working on a passport to equip them with details and documents to give them the best chance to take advantage of any career pathway opportunities that might come their way.

Knowing and having a USI, TFN and Superannuation membership will help them chase part-time work to build their transferrable skills and their confidence.

In the coming weeks student are also participating in mock Interviews with the wonderful support and involvement of North Hamilton Rotary. Students have found a job on Seek, Indeed or MEGT and they have updated their resumes and written a cover letter in preparation for their interviews. Students will be expected to wear interview appropriate clothes and the interviews should take about 15-20 minutes. Following this event, students will write a personal reflection to enable them to identify what went well and what might have been better.

Year 12 WRS industry excursions:

A small group of year 12 WRS students travelled to Portland last Thursday and Warrnambool last Friday to visit and tour several major industries in our area.

In Portland we visited, Keppel Prince, The Port of Portland, Yumbah Abalone and the Alcoa Smelter. In Warrnambool we visited Midfield Meats, Lyndoch Living and the Warrnambool Cheese and Butter Factory.

Responses from the students were very positive and they felt that the trips were well worthwhile and opened their eyes to the industries and pathways available to them so close to home; the food was also pretty good too.

ADF ‘You’ sessions in Warrnambool.

Three students travelled to Warrnambool to participate in an initial interview to join the ADF in the coming years. All three were very excited by the process and we wish them well as they proceed.

VCE Year 12s:

The year 12s have come back for the last few weeks and have continued to be offered support and opportunities for 2020 and beyond. Students have been given information about SEAS applications, scholarships and gap year training with SW TAFE and local employment opportunities.

Congratulations go to Elizabeth Goodman who has taken up a great opportunity with Southern Grampians Real estate to begin work as a property manager from late November.

Big Camp:

We have had 4 students apply to attend the Lord and Lady Sommers ‘Big Camp’ in January 2020 and hope that as in previous years, they are successful and enjoy their time there. Thanks goes to North Hamilton Rotary for the two scholarships they have made available for potential attendees.

Defying the Drift:

Molly Hardy in year 10 attended Longeronong College in Horsham over the holidays to participate in the Defying the Drift agricultural program. Molly’s attendance was fully and generously supported by Hamilton North Rotary. Molly met a lot of new and interesting people and leaned about the depth and breadth of career pathways in agriculture. Molly will be speaking at a Rotary dinner in the coming weeks to share with them her experience and to thank them for the opportunity they made possible for her.

Work experience:

There was a small group of year 10 and 11 students who took the opportunity over the holidays to contact workplaces and to again secure further work experience. Even though all students complete 2 weeks of work-experience in year 10, students are strongly encouraged to chase further opportunities to build their skills and networks. This can again be arranged over the next holiday break.

Year 12 Motivational Speaker and lunch:

We had our final lunch and speaker in week 2. Adrian Calvano spoke to the group while they enjoyed Miss GB’s lovely lunch. Adrian told the students about his own career journey and how, even though he had a rocky start, he has no regrets staying in Hamilton. His career as a mental health nurse had given him room for his love of music performance. A big thanks goes out to Miss GB for suppling so many wonderful lunches throughout the year and next year’s year 12s will again be spoilt and motivated to achieve their best.

Work Experience 2020.

Current year 9 students are strongly encouraged to begin investigating and securing work experience placements for 2020. Students are encouraged to be aspirational and to not feel locked into Hamilton. In partnership with Hamilton North Rotary, students will now have access to an even bigger network and a broader range of opportunities across the region and even the state. Further details about this will be made available in early 2020. Please speak with MVI for further paperwork and contacts both locally and away.

Year 11 2020 Pathways excursion:

In May 2020 all year 11 students will be invited to attend the thee day trip to Geelong, Melbourne and Ballarat to investigate, attend and participate in a range of career and tertiary education opportunities. This will be the first time the whole of year 11 has travelled together and it is hoped that the greater offering will mean, that every student will find the experience valuable and inspiring.

Costs are predicted to be around $250.00 to $300.00 inclusive of all accommodation, food and transport. So please start budgeting now so that you can be part of a great three days away.

Salt Creek Scholarship

Applications are now OPEN for the 2020 Salt Creek Scholarship.

All of your current Year 12 Students (and previous students who are on a Gap year) who wish to pursue a tertiary education are eligible to apply.  Please review our updated website for Eligibility, Rules and Key Dates.

We received a total of 26 applications for our inaugural 2019 Scholarship, from right across the Western District, and the Scholarship was ultimately awarded to Michael Loughhead from Warrnambool College in February of this year.  You can read more about Michael on our website.

Please help to spread the word among your students and school community, and encourage your students to apply.  Of importance - please stress to them that the Scholarship funds are to go towards their tertiary residence fees (ie. not a share house with mates, or school books).  The awarded Scholar will not receive the money directly as we will manage payments of their residential fees directly with their place of residence.

We had a number of applicants last year, who unfortunately had not read what the scholarship funds were to be used for, and (should they have been awarded the scholarship) were hoping to spend the funds on all number of things, including petrol, books, renting with friends, etc.  So it is important they are aware of what it is that they applying for and put some time into their introductory letter to tell us about themselves and their goals and dreams.
