Just Leadership Day

Last Friday, a group of our Year 9 students went to St. Virgil’s College to participate in the Caritas Just Leadership Day. The day was for schools to talk about the work of Caritas, the continuing need to support struggling communities right around the world, and for schools to think ahead to what they can do to make a positive difference to those who live on the margins. Despite some real advances in recent years to reduce the levels of global poverty and malnourishment, there are still significant sections of the world’s population who do not have access to fresh water, universal education, enough food and adequate shelter. The girls who attended returned with some important insights into the issues we still face and with ideas as to how to address them.

Warrane Primary School Visit

We had a recent visit from our friends from Warrane Primary School. Each Thursday a group of our students run a breakfast and mentoring program for the Grade 5/6 girls from Warrane, and it was great to be able to welcome them to our school for a change.

The girls were accompanied by our Year 9 and 10 students and participated in a number of activities designed to allow them to get to know what happens in a secondary school to assist with their own transition. It was a pleasure to host them here and we are looking forward to this partnership continuing in the coming years.

Mary Aikenhead Ministries Pilgrimage Visit

Mount Carmel College was honoured to receive a visit from the Mary Aikenhead Ministries Pilgrimage group, who visited the College as part of a two-day visit to Hobart tracing the footsteps of the Sisters of Charity. They engaged in a tour of our History Walk and then joined some of our staff for morning tea. It was great to see Sr. Maria Wheeler, former Principal of Mount Carmel College, helping run the pilgrimage, and it was a also a special honour for us to be able to wish her a happy 79th birthday!

St Vincent de Paul Hampers

Once again, we are supporting the Sandy Bay St. Vincent de Paul Society in getting together hampers that can be distributed to needy families over the Christmas period. Each class is required to get the items together to form a hamper, and your sons and daughters will come home with a request to bring along a particular item. Please support this great initiative as our community seeks to respond to the needs of the people in our local area.
