Year 5/6 News
Wominjeka, Buongiorno, Welcome!
Congratulations to the school leaders for 2022 who were announced at our assembly at the end of Week 3. Alessia Perrotta and Nathan Drazic were selected as school captains from a number of outstanding candidates who all made excellent presentations.
Our House captains were also announced at the assembly and they are:
Flinders- Ruby Gauci
Sloane Hanley
Bass- Rebecca Beninati
Daniel Christoff
Cook- Charlie Gray
Erika Puccio
Burke- Ella Lamanna
Mattia Codini
We have also just witnessed and voted on the Year 5 SRC students for this year. Congratulations to Livio Tomasiello and Billy Sapountzis, our successful SRC's who were voted by their peers for their leadership and desire to deliver action within our community.
That just leaves our Fire Carriers as our final formal leadership positions to be announced for this year. These important roles promote reconciliation both inside and outside the school driving community engagement. The successful students will be announced at this week's assembly.
Google Classroom
The students have become quite used to Google Classroom as their main digital source of information. Announcements are regularly posted on there, including weekly reminders.
If your child is unsure of any requirements please redirect them to Google Classroom as the first place to check.
Expectations
Each week the students are expected to complete four Spelling tasks at home as well as reading 4-5 nights a week. There is also an expectation that students will regularly use the My Numeracy and Sunset Maths functions on Essential Assessment.
It is also really important that each student attends every day with a fully charged device.
A friendly reminder that Year 6 Jumpers are only to be worn with the Sports Uniform.
For this term, students are expected to wear their sports uniform on Thursdays. Full school uniform is required on all other days.
RE/Wellbeing
Students have begun our rotational focus in RE and Wellbeing, intertwining the two areas. Throughout the sessions, students engage in stations which provide provocations to illicit thought about our current focus of community and the 'Common Good.' To support their preparation for the Sacrament of Confirmation, Year Six students have begun to explore the Holy Spirit and their own special Gifts and Fruits.
Mathematics
Students have been investigating place value during mathematics. Students have explored the large numbers and practiced ordering and comparing numbers based on certain place values. Students were tasked with building a 100 000 MAB where they employed creative strategies to either abstractly or quantitatively demonstrate what that would look like. Students used cardboard and other materials to create different versions of how big that number would be with 1 x 1 x 1 cm cubes.
Literacy
In Literacy, students have been reading, annotating, and critiquing persuasive texts. Students have explored the structure and convincing techniques of persuasive texts. Multiple types of texts have been analysed; from advertisements to debating speeches. Students have had the opportunity to brainstorm and write their own texts about subjects they are passionate about. Exciting warm ups of ‘Would You Rather’ have seen many interesting justifications for their decisions.
