Senior Years News

Maffra Secondary College is proud to announce our 2021 Dux – Joshua Caithness, who has graduated with an ATAR of 95.55.

Josh is extremely happy with this result and he is looking forward to studying Computer Science at University of New South Wales next year, with the goal of working in cybersecurity in the future.

“This year has been absolutely incredible. I couldn’t have done it without all of my super supportive teachers and family, and definitely not without my inspiring and ultra-competitive peers. I am really excited to relocate interstate next year” said Josh.

Josh worked consistently during his VCE despite the difficulties associated with remote learning due to COVID-19, and the College is delighted that his great attitude to study has paid off. He has been an excellent role model for other students. We wish him all the best with his future endeavours.

As the Principal, I am so proud of all of our Year 12 students. They have faced the challenges associated with remote and flexible learning throughout their final 2 years of secondary school education with resilience and persistence.

As a cohort they have developed strong connections and have maintained unwavering support for each other, both academically and perhaps more importantly, emotionally throughout the year. These personal attributes have allowed them to look out for each other and, no matter their pathway or what their futures bring, we are confident that these young adults will succeed in life.

Collectively, we have seen our results improve significantly in many areas this year and we will continue to build on this. We could not be happier for Josh, who has actively demonstrated our school values of Respect, Community, Resilience and Learning. He has a very clear pathway for his future and we wish him all the success with this.

The College’s 2021 VCE results have increased across the board, with a new median study score of 28. One in every seven students achieved an ATAR above 90. MSC is very proud of our entire school leaving cohort, who have worked very hard and will go on to access a broad range of pathways, both vocational and academic. The majority of our VCAL students have secured great apprenticeships, due to the broad range of learning experiences and skills they have gained through our applied learning programs and structured work placements. The College excels in producing young people who are well-rounded, resilient, community-minded and passionate about their futures.

Senior School Information Evening / Welcome BBQ

On Wednesday the 2nd of February the College held our Senior School information evening and BBQ for families of students in years 10, 11 and 12.

There was important information discussed regarding our Year 10 program, as well as the VCE and VCAL programs delivered at MSC.  The purpose of the evening was to ensure parents / guardians are familiar with the expectations of students during their final years of schooling, so that students can be well-supported from home as well as at school.

Following our school review in 2021, the College have responded to findings and feedback by aligning Year 10 with our Senior School. As a result, Year 10 units will now be assessed each semester as ‘satisfactory’ (S) or not-satisfactory (N), and Year 10 students will need to demonstrate exemplary attendance, satisfactory achievement on common assessment tasks (CATs), and completion of required coursework, in order to achieve an S.

It was wonderful to see so many families attend this evening to meet staff and find out what is expected of students in their final years of secondary school.

A big thank-you goes out for all those who attended what was a productive evening.  If any parents / guardians have any questions they can contact Marie Clark (senior school leader) on marie.clark@education.vic.gov.au
