Swimming Carnival

Pentridge Wins!

The weather was iconic and the music was epic at Coburg Olympic Pool for the 2022 Swimming Carnival. We saw 12 records broken and one of the longest dance parties yet. At a time when many of our community have had to isolate it was amazing to see over 3/4 of our students there, with the Year 11s topping it at 84% attendance! Thank you students and staff for an amazing day.

House Program

I would like to congratulate the 18 students across year 7- 12 who have been appointed House Leader Titles for 2022.  We would like to acknowledge their contributions and thank the students who missed out this year for taking the courageous step of putting their names out there. We have lots of amazing opportunities ahead of us over the rest of the year that we look forward to them leading and contributing to the reignition of the house spirit here at CHS. Keep your eyes peeled for the first of many house challenges on Compass in the coming weeks.

Chinese New Year

Coburg High School welcomed in the Year of the Tiger with a series of lunch time activities during week 3.

Monday began with our students writing down their new year wishes on a pair of Lunar New Year Couplets (usually two long panels of red paper that frame an entrance to bring in good luck). Wishes included the following:

“I want to get really good at art”, “I wish covid gets eradicated”, “World Peace”, “I want to go overseas”, “Learn more about science”, “I want a new dirt bike”, “Get taller”, “To get good grades and get better at sports”, “Be happy and rich”, “I wish for a dog”, “I wish to make lots of friends”, "I wish for everyone’s wishes to come true", and also general wishes for a happy new year, wishing people good health and success in the Year 2022.

Tuesday we turned the focus to giving to others. Hong Bao, Red envelopes/packets with money, are traditionally given from senior to juniors, from old to young as a gift. Students were given the opportunity to place a written New year wish instead of money into the Hong Bao and give it to a friend, family member, or staff member.

Wednesday was a chance to demonstrate the Lunar New Year custom of cleaning up: Sweeping out the bad luck, ready to welcome all the good luck of the new year. Students scrambled around the school, picking up rubbish in order to receive good luck and a small sweet treat.

With all that luck, good will and camaraderie built up from the week, the students took that to the Swim Carnival on Thursday. Surely being the year of the WATER tiger, that undoubtedly would have helped our swimmers.

Friday Coburg High School had a special Lunar New Year menu available from the school cafe which included a number of Chinese foods popular during this period due to what they represent and symbolise: noodles for long life and spring rolls resembling gold bars. Students and staff were also treated to a special Chinese Lion Dance performance from Hung Gar Yau Shu Martial Arts school. Students marvelled at the combination of martial arts and acrobatics to portray the movement of the lion accompanied by the percussionists on the drum, cymbals and gong.  This combination wards away the bad luck and bad spirits while bringing in the good fortune. The lion performers also played catch with our students, spitting out whole oranges representing round lumps of gold, and flinging fortuitous candy from their mouths.

We also saw the return of the Lunar New Year Daily quiz, with a new question posted each school day during the 16 day Lunar New Year celebration period. Students learned a bit about Lunar New Year each day and with each correct answer also had the opportunity to win a small lantern display. Each correct answer throughout the whole two weeks entered into the Grand Prize draw of a $20 voucher to the school cafe. Many students increased their odds by tuning in and submitting their answers for each new question each day.

Again, congratulations to our daily mini prize winners (also please come collect your mini prize if you have yet to do so): Douglas 8I, Hana 7B, Flynn 7E, Lyn 12E, Presilla 10G, Kedir 7J, Saleh 9A, Ada 8E, Rosh 7G and Grace 8J

BUT FINALLY, the final drumroll…

Congratulations to our winner of the $20 Cafe voucher: CASSIUS OF 7I

And we also could not neglect giving Presilla of 10G, who entered a correct answer for all eleven days that the Lunar Quiz ran for, a runner up prize of a special Lunar New Year 10-pack of Pocky.

Thanks for participating everyone! Wishing you all a prosperous, lucky and successful 2022!

Valentine's Day

This year on Valentine's Day we put the focus on kindness to self, and gratitude to others. We had our first out of uniform day, with students encouraged to wear warm or bright colours and bring a gold coin. We raised a massive $620.60 for Kids Under Cover, a non profit that supports young people and provides them with opportunities to reach their full potential via secure and stable accommodation. The cafe served delicious treats, and our always popular 'Blind Date with a Book' returned to the library.

Students were encouraged to write messages to their peers and created these amazing walls of positivity.

Cricket

On Tuesday the 15th of February the boys senior cricket team played in their first round of cricket inter school sports. We played Ilim college in a T20 which was played in great spirit and everyone enjoyed the game. A couple of standout performances with Taras Scurry batting well and steadying the ship after a top order collapse. We were able to put on a score of 105 in 20 overs with small contributions. Our bowling innings went very well as we were able to take consistent wickets and bowling them out for 66 in 17 overs. Daniel Potter and Liam Kelly were the standout bowlers picking up a few wickets each and not giving much away. It was a very successful and fun day. Now we are onto regionals on the 22nd of February where hopefully we can win some more games and move on to the next round.
