Year 7 2022 – First Week of Secondary School

Congratulations to our Year 7 students on an amazing start to secondary school. Students participated in Keys to Success activities designed to help them understand the college’s CORE values and motto 'Belong, Believe, Become'. Students also learnt about our School Wide Positive Behaviour approach and how we use Teams and OneNote for learning.

Student reflections and photos of Year 7 Sport below!

My first week of school has been amazing! The teachers have been very welcoming and approachable and have taught us in a fun way (Mr MacDonald even did the moon walk!). I feel like I fit in already. The timetable and layout of the school has been easy to understand. I have enjoyed every single subject and learnt quite a bit already.

We started our school day by waiting in the gym with our GOAL groups, and soon after Mrs Chaves gave us a quick briefing of what we were to do. I was in goal group four, along with all my other friends. We followed our goal teacher, Mr McDonald to our room and my friends instantly claimed the comfy couches and tables in the alcoves that lined the wall. Mr McDonald then introduced himself and we all played an “Icebreaker” game. He then showed us a detailed presentation of school values and expectations, such as CORE values and ICT rules.

On Tuesday we played a game where you had to throw a ball on a net and then have your teammate catch it. There was also an opposition team who would try to intercept your passes and score themselves.

School had no sooner started than finished, and that was the end of orientation, and the next day was going to be a new adventure.

6.30am. It was time to wake up. I had a lot of nerves inside me, but I also had a lot of excitement, so I got up and got ready to go to Beaumaris Secondary for my big day. As I went into the car I was starting to panic, but I kept thinking of all the positives. We arrived at the school. I saw some other students and they looked extremely nervous as well. My mum walked me to the gym and then we had to get into our GOAL groups. My nerves started to go away, and I felt nice and calm, it was great. Our first break started. It was a bit uncomfortable around so many people, but I got used to it. Break was over and then we had our next session where we learnt how to unlock our locks for our lockers and when I learnt how to use my locker it was the next break. 3.10pm, the day ended, and I was so excited to talk to my family about it. This week was so good and I really began to feel comfortable at the school. I met new people, I felt more like an adult, and I felt comfortable to talk to people. The teachers were very kind and welcoming and the staff in the office were as well. The Principal gave us a warm welcome to Beaumaris and I'm really excited for my future ahead at the school.

The first week of anything new is hard and scary.

Whenever I passed Beaumaris Secondary over the holiday break, I got excited and nervous at the same time. The one thing out of everything that made me feel better was the transition process. For the kids that were going to Beaumaris Secondary College without anyone else from their primary school, we got to meet each other and from there, I made two of my first friends at the school.

On the first day, I was so surprised by how I wasn’t that nervous or anxious. I was so excited that I ran across the street to greet my friends and I felt like this was the place for me.

When we met in the gym and separated into GOAL groups, we learnt that the first two days were focused on getting to know the school and getting to know how it works and what it means to be part of the Beaumaris Secondary College community. I felt a real feeling of belonging but that we were also being well looked after and cared for as the youngest students at the school now.

The locks and lockers were probably the trickiest part of the first two days of Year 7 and after 1 hour and 25 minutes, I managed to open the lock (it was harder to put the lock on the locker!) Managing the lockers, all the big kids getting to their lockers at the same time and getting used to the school day, the rooms and the teachers, has all been very new and a bit challenging, and the older kids look REALLY old, but as we know, new and scary things are part of growing up and often also the most exciting times.
