7S @ KIOSC

Unboxy Challenge

Last week 7S attended a 3 day program at KIOSC along with representatives from other local schools.  They were set a design brief and were required to design and construct their plan using various pieces of cut cardboard.

Our groups created amazing designs, so much so that teams from Wantirna College won various awards on the day – well done! This really displays the ingenuity and teamwork that is present in our year 7 students and we look forward to them building on this great foundation in the years to come!

Challenge set: We had to design and build something to help make Knox a better place

Reflection (as a team):

· What was it that you were doing over the course of the three days?

· What was the purpose (reason) for this challenge?

· What challenges did you come up against? How did you address these as a group?

· What did you learn from this experience?

· What did you enjoy the most from this experience?

· If someone else was going to be going to this activity, what advice would your team give to them?

On the 14th of February we embarked on a great engineering challenge to build the trojan horse. This was to make Knox more interesting and multicultural, this is from a Greek story that symbolizes Greek pride. We overcame a lot of challenges with the legs and making it stable, but our teamwork made us successful.

We enjoyed watching our creation get the engineering award and we were all so proud. We got a lot out of it and learned the value of teamwork, we learned about engineering and math connections.

We had a lot of good ideas for the tail and head and everyone contributed because when everyone contributes you have the most fun. The final touches and pitch were so fun because we got to have fun with the improvements like the ears and our pitch was fun for all of us.

Some advice for anyone doing this project is to keep an open mind, work together and most importantly keep tidy.

Challenge set: Un-boxy Challenge, Multi-purpose Structure

Reflection (as a team):

Our group was designing a multi-purpose structure used for anything. The structure had 5 pods that have their own purpose.

This was the end structure, we had to start from somewhere. Our starting point was building a chair, which we failed miserably. Although we failed, we obtained lots of knowledge about building with cardboard.

Why did we do this? We had to design a new structure for the new Knox. We thought Knox was missing a multi-purpose area.

The challenge we faced was that we weren't very good at making clear decisions. An example of this is when on the first day, half of the group was thinking of making a food cart, while half was thinking of making a DJ booth. We addressed this problem by agreeing with the food cart, but making it a better idea. Instead of just being a food cart, we thought of a utopia full of activities to do.

What did we learn? Well, we learnt that cardboard could be able to make anything if you can put your mind to it. We also learnt that decision making is important in group projects, such as this challenge.

Peter enjoyed making the domes/pods for the utopia. Sean enjoyed popping the circles of the template and putting everything together to make it look good. Isaac enjoyed making the cardboard chair on the first day, this is the chair that failed, miserably. Alex enjoyed watching the team meeting, seeing who won. Last but not least, Jett enjoyed helping Peter making the domes and going onto the bus.

If we had the chance to give advice to people participating in this challenge, they should make very clear decisions about what they are or their group is building. This will help productivity and efficiency on how everything is put together.

Hi we were group 3. We participated in the Unboxy Challenge. The Unboxy Challenge is to experiment with your creativity, and see what you can make with limited resources, plus it is also a fun activity to build teamwork.

On the first day we experimented with all of the materials we were given. We designed a chair that had to hold a someone for 15 seconds. We also got a piece of paper to put down our design. We were making an outdoor entertainment centre with a multi-skilled rock-climbing wall, a playground for the little ones, a stage where live performances could be held with upcoming community bands and a picnic area to chill and settle down after a long day of shopping.

On the second day we began our design and it was terrifying but so exhilarating! The cardboard pieces were so hard to use. We struggled for a little while, then regrouped and put our ideas together to build the most amazing outdoor entertainment centre you have ever seen!  We split off into two groups working on different areas at the same time to be more efficient with the time we were given.

Lastly, on the third day we added some finishing touches to our structure and then finished writing our pitch. Next we presented our pitch to the class. The judges came around and we presented it to them as well. Unfortunately we didn't win any awards but overall it was lots of fun and it was a great learning experience.

We had a great time doing this challenge, and something we all learned was how to all work well together as a team and incorporate everyone's ideas into one.

Reflection (as a team):

What was it that you were doing over the course of the three days?

What was the purpose (reason) for this challenge?

What challenges did you come up against? How did you address these as a group?

What did you learn from this experience?

What did you enjoy the most from this experience?

If someone else was going to be going to this activity, what advice would your team give to them?

Over the course of the three days, we designed a multi-purpose space for Knox Westfield, encouraging well-being, self-care and security (in a way). The purpose of the challenge was to design a new space for the Knox community using cardboard.

Some challenges that we faced were lack of communication, which didn’t allow us all to be on the same page. We learnt the importance of teamwork, communication and that cardboard has more purposes than we thought. We enjoyed the outcome of our hard work and project.

Our advice we would give to others doing this challenge would be to think outside the box, communicate with your team - and make the most of your time and don't forget to have fun!

Thanks needs to go to KIOSC for making this possible as well as all of the teachers who helped: Janelle Hillebrand, Karen Priest, Leanne Wilson and Caitlin Scholefield.
