Middle Years

Year 8 – 10 Family Night

On the 21st February we were delighted to have the team from Ysafe present a webinar to parents to delve into some of the issues around cyber safety.

An online hub has been set up for parents of Wantirna College to find out more information around some of the key issues such as gaming, cyberbullying and how to talk to your child about content they may view online.

If you would like to access the hub, you can follow this link: https://wantirnacollege.cybersafetyhub.com.au

The link is available for all parents of Wantirna College.

Humanities in the Middle Years

Year 7s have been focused on our Civics & Citizenship unit, ‘Our Australian Identity’. We are starting to look at how groups of people express their identities, including first nations people, within Australia’s multicultural population. This week, 7S spent time on a learning walk at different information stations about Expressing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identities, allowing them to summarise new knowledge, clarify misconceptions and highlight interesting information about aspects of identity.

Year 8s have also started the year with Civics & Citizenship, focusing on the main features of government in Australia, working towards creating a ‘foldable’ checkpoint task to demonstrate their knowledge of the three features we have focused on:

· Separation of Powers

· Bicameral Parliament – Roles of the two houses

· Division of Powers between the federal and state parliaments

Our new elective program for Years 9 and 10 has started well, giving students more options to focus on humanities domains that they most enjoy, completing those studies in semester units. We look forward to showcasing some of their work in future newsletters.

Year 8 News

Today was a massive day for our Year 8 students!

Year 8 is gearing up for a question-filled Homegroup Trivia Competition in Week 6 which will see the students putting their knowledge to the test on all things general, pop-culture, gaming, sports and more. We are all super excited to see the students flex their skills and earn their homegroup a treat!

We have also launched Year 8 Challenge Week via a year level assembly!  Even though it was a virtual assembly you could see how excited the students were.

Challenge Week aligns closely with the focus that we set for our Year 8 students to ‘Challenge Yourself’.  We know that students who regularly challenge themselves are more resilient and more motivated to achieve their personal best, both in and out of school.

The program also has strong links to the SRC Term 1 focus of ‘Connections’ as students will have a range of opportunities to build strong relationships with their peers and teachers throughout the week.

Challenge Week runs from 21st March to 25th March for all Year 8 students.  Throughout the week students will participate in 5 different excursions:

  • Bike riding around the local area and The 'Unboxy Challenge' at KIOSC
  • Canoeing/Kayaking and Geocaching at Lilydale Lake Reserve
  • Escape Room experience and Raft building
  • Stand Up Paddle Boarding and Beach Activities (including Beaching Volleyball, Beach Games)
  • Tree Surfing at Trees Adventure

Consent and payment for the event are due on Thursday 10th March.

For more details about the program please check the Compass Event.

If you have any questions regarding the Year 8 Challenge Week please do not hesitate to contact the Year 8 Team.
