VCAL boat trip around Corio Bay

Written by the Year 11 VCAL Class

On the 8th of September the intermediate VCAL students went to Geelong Royal Yacht club and listened to a 2 hour talk about Corio Bay and we had a lady from Viva Energy talk to us about what they’re working on with oil, gas and electricity powering and job opportunities for us when we are older.

On the 8th of November we got to hop on a boat to go around the bay, the reason for the excursion was to see the places where we could get jobs around the port for our work-related skills class. As a regulation we had to learn what to do in case the boat capsized, like putting on the life jackets and what to do when in the water.

During this tour Franz was the captain and Peter was the person talking, explaining about everything we were seeing, talking about the ships we were seeing and their uses, how far they travel, how much weight they hold. We were also taught about the markers in the shipping channel which is very narrow.

Peter was in the middle of making an announcement something about the bay and all of a sudden, he said, “Sorry I’ve just been distracted by some dolphins up the front” and of course everyone jumped up to video and photograph the dolphins.
