‘Only A Monster’ by Vanessa Len

Review by Lyra Malone 7L

Joan Chang-Hunt goes to stay at her Gran’s house every summer. Little does she know this summer will change her life forever. She learns that her family has a dark secret, a family power that’s more than just making things appear and disappear. She also learns that the boy she has had a crush on all summer, Nick, is hiding something as well, something that puts Joan and everyone she loves in grave danger.

While running from the oncoming war between her people and Nick’s people, she begrudgingly teams up with Aaron Oliver, the son of the Olivers; her family's arch enemies. Will they work together to end the war and save Joan’s family?

After reading this fantasy-adventure novel I am pulled along a path full of mystery, adventure, fantasy, and a hint of teenage romance. Vanessa Len has twisted good and evil to become one, complicated mix. It is captivating and unique, and I highly recommend it for anyone from Year 7 and up, who loves fantasy and adventure, with a touch of teenage drama. It is available now in the MFG library.

I cannot wait to get my hands on the sequel, ‘Never A Hero’.
