My thoughts are with you all during these extremely unpredictable and testing circumstances. I send my best wishes to you all in remaining safe. Watching the solidarity of the entire community coming together has been amazing to witness. Well done to all Eastie families who have been out there day and night supporting each other.
I realise that we have a long way to go before this is over. The impacts of natural disasters can be stressful and traumatic for both adults and children alike, with impacts on mental health and wellbeing. Many people think that babies and children are not affected by such events, as they are too young to understand. However, children of all ages can become affected by the stress around them and get stressed in response.
Be You has a short article which explains the impacts of natural disasters and signs to look for that your child may be experiencing distress.
Emerging Minds also has a couple of great articles about helping your child through a flood emergency. There are some great practical tips on supporting children before, during and after a flood event. It also provides links to more specific resources which may be helpful.
And finally, please look after yourself. Make sure you take time for self-care. Our children look towards their carers during stressful times to help them make sense of the situation.
If any family or student needs any support during this time, please don’t hesitate to contact me on Nicole.Chalmers@education.vic.gov.au and I will do my utmost best to help point you in the right direction. Never be afraid to reach out for help. Even if it’s just for a chat.
Take care and stay safe.
