School Council Treasurer Required

Looking for a new School Council Treasurer

School Council plays an important role in the oversight of our school’s operation, including overseeing the school’s financial performance. A great opportunity exists to join School Council as Treasurer from 2023, as our current Treasurer will be leaving the school as her youngest child moves onto secondary school. A new 2023 treasurer would be welcome to work cooperatively with the current treasurer for the remainder of the year. The School Council Treasurer is a parent member of School Council who works closely with the Principal, School Council President and Business Manager (Pip Sciffer) to report to Council on relevant financial reports.

About the role: The Treasurer is the convener of the Finance Subcommittee, which meets a week prior to School Council meetings to review the financial reports prepared by the school's Business Manager. Financial reports include school budgets, operating reports and finance related policies (most of which are adopted directly from the Department of Education). The agenda and finance reports are shared a few days prior to the Finance Subcommittee meeting to allow time for the Treasurer to review, which normally takes about 1 hour depending on the number of finance reports included. This meeting runs for about 30-45 minutes with timing and location flexible (can be virtual or in-person). During the meeting, the Treasurer raises any questions they may have on the finance reports and reconciles some reports to supporting documentation (for example Bank Statements). The Treasurer then presents the finance report (as prepared by the Business Manager) to School Council at the monthly (approximately) meeting.

Skills required: The Treasurer’s role is a rewarding one, receiving great insight into how the school works whilst contributing to the school. It is well suited to a parent with finance and governance knowledge (basic level) and is curious. For anyone interested, the current Treasurer would be happy to meet with you to discuss the role further, and work with you during a transition period during the remainder of this year.
