Mandarin

Foundation students in Hampton Primary School start learning Mandarin with authentic language materials, including Mandarin picture books, Mandarin songs and Chinese animation videos. We try to use very little English in the classroom. Instead, we use gestures and picture cards as visual clues to help students remember the Mandarin pronunciation and meanings. They learn Mandarin words and sentences to tell their everyday life including family, friends and school.

Foundation students use Mandarin words of family members to remake a well-known children song. We also call this song 《我的家》(My Family

By Year 1, students are able to understand basic instructions in Mandarin in the classroom. They can also respond to familiar scenarios with Mandarin words and sentences.

This was an example of Year 1 students singing Birthday Song to their friends in Mandarin, when they learnt that it was their birthday on the day.

MUSIC

On June 9th our 5/6 students travelled to Hamer Hall to see an amazing concert of indigenous entertainers including the rapper Baker Boy. We had incredible seats and the students LOVED the performance. Huge thanks to the parents who came along and helped supervise the students!
