Winter Sport Gala Day

Gala Day
Over the past two Friday’s, the senior students of St John Vianney’s competed in the Winter Sport Gala Day against other schools within the area. The sports included soccer, netball, AFL and teeball and were held at different venues. All students demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship and tried their absolute best. We extend a big well done and congratulations to all students!
AFL
Training in AFL was fun, we learnt a lot about where to go and where we can go on the field. There was a lot of passing, catching, and trying to get the ball in the goal. We learnt more and more every training day. We were competitive, persistent and determined to score a goal. AFL is an exciting thing to learn about and it was absolutely amazing.

For the last two Fridays we have been competing against other schools in the amazing sport, Footy. We played five games in total and sadly we did not win any. We were able to kick one goal in total and we were all very excited when we did. It was a lot of fun and we learnt a lot. Overall it was amazing to work as a team and play against other schools. Ten out of Ten!

Soccer
We have been playing, training and learning about soccer throughout this term. Because we had lots of people we needed to split the students into an A and B team. The A team won 5/6 games while B won 3/6 games. It was lots of fun because we worked as a team and played amazingly with each other. Another really good thing about soccer is that Mr Nguyen taught us lots of new positions, skills and ways to play and enjoy soccer.

For our first Gala day, we went to freeway reserve to play soccer! In the first game, I watched the first half from the side lines but played in the second half. One of the SJV players in the attack had the ball then passed it over to me. I was nervous but soon started to dribble the ball towards the goal. It was super cold and windy, and my hair was blowing in my face. I could barely see, but I surprisingly kicked the goal! I was in shock but very excited at the same time.
The second gala day was at Freeway Reserve as well. The B team won 1 out of 4 games and all together we won 3 out of 6. For the last 2 games I was goalkeeping and saved a good amount of balls trying to get in the goal. When I was goalkeeping a player on the other team kicked a goal. It hit my face first then went in the goal. Sacrificed my face for nothing! There was mud all over my face and I didn't even realize. It was still a lot of fun and I enjoyed it.

Teeball
For the last two weeks, the teeballers have been practising and playing at Mulgrave Primary School against other schools like St Justin's and Good Shepherd. There were six games in total in which the boy Teeballers won every game, surprising the principal and teachers. The teeball girls had also won most games they played, winning five out of the six games. We have also heard good things about our teeball team being good sports. We would like to congratulate both teams for winning most games and being good sports. It was an incredibly fun game for all of us.

For the last two weeks, the grade fives and sixes have been going to different sporting venues on Friday to compete for their schools. The teeballers went to Mulgrave Primary School to compete against teams like Good Shepherd Primary School, Waverly Meadows, St Leonards and other schools. The mixed team won all of their games throughout the two weeks, and the girls team won all of their games except one against St Leonards. In total, St John Vianney's won 11/12 of their games and ended up winning teeball. The teeballers were really excited about winning and we all had an incredibly fun time during our Gala Days.

Netball
Over the last two Fridays some of the year 5 and 6 students played Netball out of school. There were 3 teams, the mixed team, B girls and A girls. Everyone in netball competed at Waverley Netball Centre. The girls and boys played against other schools such as Good Shepherd, St Justins, Mulgrave Primary and Brandon Park. However, we didn’t get to compete against St Leonard’s. On the Fridays we played, our coach was Miss D. Girls A and Girls B didn’t win any games but on the positive side the mixed team won 1 game out of 4 matches! Sadly, it was raining outside causing the mixed team to only play one game.

For the last two Fridays the Netball teams have been playing against other teams at Waverley Netball Centre. I don't know much about the A and B girls team because I was in the mixed team. In the first week, the mixed team didn't win any games but they still did their best. During the second week the mixed team got their first win but after a few minutes when the second game started, it started to rain. So we watched the A and B girls team play although they didn't win they played very well. It was incredibly good fun playing against other teams and we had a blast there.
