Middle School

Reflection and looking to the future

As we near the end of the term it is a time for reflection, and to think ahead to the future. Reflection is hard. Sometimes it can be really difficult to look with a critical eye at ourselves and how we have performed. But what it allows is us to grow as people, to uncover our talents and be honest with ourselves.  As reports are released next week, this is a perfect time for students to reflect academically. Not just on the marks that appear, but also on their behaviours and interactions in class. What are they proud of? Did they work really hard to get a passing grade in a subject that was really difficult for them? Or perhaps it was getting their first ever A. Was it being organised, on time to class? Whatever it is, I encourage students to reflect on their performance and use this as the catalyst to set goals for the semester ahead.

In just over a semester, new journeys in education will begin for our Middle Schoolers. Our Year Nines will transition into the world of Senior School. They will need to start planning for their pathways and considering subjects that will assist them in life outside of school. Our Year Eights will need to consider leadership positions and plan for how their final year in Middle School will be spent. And for our Year Sevens, they will no longer be the youngest, but rather experienced Middle Schoolers who can become mentors for the new students gracing our hallway. There is so much to plan for, so much to look forward to as we near our holiday break and prepare for the remainder of 2022. I have asked some of our Middle School students to be reflective about the year so far and to set goals for the future. This is what they had to say.

Quotes on reflection:

  • I am proud that I have become better at basketball.
  • I learnt to row.
  • I’m proud that I learnt how to cook bacon.
  • I am really glad I made new friends.

Goals for the rest of the year:

  • Win my netball grand final.
  • Not fail Mathematics.
  • To catch a fish during VACS.
  • Get a bullseye in archery.
  • Not to be late.
  • Read over 50 books.

A reminder too that the Middle School leaders are still collecting non-perishable food items for Albany’s Foodbank. All donations should be made by the end of June so that the collection can be delivered. Thank you to all that have already donated, my office is looking very full.
