From the Acting Principal

Happy Birthday, GSG!

Who doesn't love a birthday party?  On Monday we celebrated GSG's birthday and were able to hold an assembly for the first time in a long time.  It was stirring to hear our Pipe Band lead in the official party, heartening to see parents back to celebrate with us, and joyous to take the time to recognise and celebrate the extraordinary history of our school. From the outset, as a school, we were welcomed onto Menang land by Uncle Aidan Eades, who said at the School's opening:   The school grounds are of special significance to local Noongars, the Kalgan and King Rivers meeting close by. Never forget that Noongar land, but you are welcome to use it, especially for...something like education.

On Monday we were joined by School founder, Dr Peter Pratten and his son Simon, along with other special guests.  Our students from Years Two to Year Twelve showcased their oratory skills, sharing snippets of the school's history with us.  It's extraordinary to remember, as one of our speakers told us, that the school started with nothing more than idea and, Mr Stephen Lee (the School's first Principal), sold his Land Cruiser and with the $18,500 registered the trading name Great Southern Grammar.   And, before we moved to the current site on which the school stands,  GSG started in a building on Serpentine Road in town and Kagi Sensei used to bring children on school camps to where we are standing now.   Mrs Anne Bell was a teacher at GSG when the school first opened in that old building in town.  She said: The school ran on the smell of an oily rag and a good dose of staff enthusiasm and foresight. Paint peeled like banana skins from the walls. But we held on to the dream that whispered possibility

After opening with 35 students, GSG has grown into the extraordinary community it is today, and our Foundation Day was a chance to share stories and give thanks for those who had the vision and commitment to realise a dream.

Congratulations to Lucas Ravenhill!

Congratulations to Lucas Ravenhill (Year Eleven) who has been chosen to represent Western Australia in the Under 16 Australian Rules Football team. Lucas will travel to Adelaide this weekend to play in the National game. We are very proud of Lucas and we wish him all the best in his first game.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Keep a watchful eye out for the opportunity to book Parent Teacher interviews which will take place on Monday 18 July.  Your child's teachers have been nurturing their learning since the start of the year and keeping you informed via SEQTA, email, phone or face to face meetings during the semester.  Now, we welcome this opportunity to meet via Teams or face to face, on campus.  A strong connection between child, parent and educator is the most beneficial way to support your child's learning, and we look forward to seeing you on this day.
