Non - Fiction

This term all stages will be looking at Non-Fiction. The genre of Non-Fiction makes up so much of our reading. A nonfiction book is one that tells you facts and information about the world around you. It can cover almost any topic, from wild animals to Vikings to jokes biographies, space, cooking, Minecraft, and the list goes on. However, we don't get all our information from books we can get it from posters, diagrams, maps, talks by specialist people eg zookeepers, menus, videos about specialist subjects etc.

There are lots of children who prefer to read non-fiction books but we try to encourage a whole range of reading. We also have lots of books that are Informative Narratives which means they tell a story with characters, setting and plots but give information as well, for example many of our books about the Anzacs and war are written as Informative Narratives.

Children can be encouraged to read a whole range of materials, for example

menus

maps

biographies

instructions

recipe books

signs

posters

diagrams

Encourage children to read for pleasure as research has found that reading for pleasure can increase empathy, improve relationships with others, reduce the symptoms of depression and improve wellbeing throughout life.

Happy reading!
