From the Chaplain

This year we have two classes of Year Twelve Certificate IV Business students.  Like last year, they had to complete a unit on a project.  As the Mother’s Day Stall last year was such as success, we decided to run it again.  The fourteen students made gifts for the stall such as: chopping boards, wet necks, diffusers, macramé, crochet goods, plants and more.  This stall was able to raise an amazing $853.90.

The students then researched three local Albany charities and decided out of those three who should be the recipient of the money raised at the stall.  The students then presented their findings to students and executive staff (Mr Orr the School Business Manager, Mrs Franklin Acting Principal, and Mrs Turnor Head of Senior School).  Votes were then taken to see who the winning charity would be.  This year the results were:

  • 4th - RFDS and Foodbank
  • 3rd - Albany Women’s Shelter
  • 2nd - Proudies
  • 1st - Albany Community Hospice.

We were then very pleased to be able to hand over this money to Ms Sonja Coleman from the Albany Community Hospice.  She came to our assembly on Monday to receive the donation and talk to us about the Hospice.

She explained that the Hospice was hugely reliant on donations.  Sonja said they have had patients there from ages 8 to 104 and had animals visit such as a pony that went right up to a patient’s bedside.  With the Business students' donation, the Hospice is going to purchase a Virtual Reality headset. This will allow patients to look through it and see things that they perhaps never got to see and wished they did.  This could be the Great Wall of China or somewhere in Paris.

As a school, one of our values is compassion. We are really glad that we are able to donate to such a worthy cause and show compassion to the people who use this facility.
