Relay for Life

Milgate Primary School's 'Milgate Angels' team, along with some of our DSC students invite you to join them in their Relay For Life Australia this weekend. Relay For Life Australia is a fun and moving overnight experience that raises funds for Cancer Council’s vital work in cancer research, prevention, information and support. It’s also a chance for the local community to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients and carers, and to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer. Join the thousands of Australians who take part in or support Relay For Life each year in the fight against cancer!

Relay for Life - Interview with Stevaan A. 7G

Tell us a little bit about your involvement in Relay for Life with Milgate Primary School.

I have been involved in Relay for Life for a few years, since Year 4 when I was at Milgate Primary School. This year (my first year at Doncaster Secondary College as a year 7) will be my fourth year.

When did you start doing Relay for Life?

My family and I knew a couple of people that suffered from cancer and we wanted to find a way we could support them. My parents and I started a Relay for Life team. My three best friends have done it every year and my two younger siblings Chyna and Synclair are doing it this year.

What do you find most rewarding about it?

I like knowing that I am supporting people who are in need of help. Each small step we take to help brings us closer to a breakthrough to cure cancer.

What is your favourite subject at school this year and why?

I really like Science. We've just finished a topic on separating mixtures and now we're doing simple machines. We will be learning about levers. Ms. Katiforis is my Science teacher and she always makes the class so interesting and fun.

Junior Basketball Competition

On Wednesday, 5 September, in preparation for the Australian school championships, our Middle school students competed against basketball schools in the area to improve their basketball skills in the college's Stadium. Overall it was an excellent day.

MAV Mathematics Games Day

On Monday 3 September, two groups of four Year 7 students departed to the MAV Mathematics Games day at Waverley Christian College. We began the day with a quick warm-up of maths puzzles, before delving straight into some challenging problem-solving. We then moved on to individually compete against students from other schools in mind-blowing maths games.

Following this, it was time for the most exciting part of the day – the maths relay! We worked hard for forty-five minutes, one member of each team continuously racing through the hall to collect new problems. Many thanks to Mr Simon and Mr Liu for making such an exciting day for everyone.

MyCity Melbourne Zoo

On August 29, as part of the MyCity unit of the year 9 MySelf program, a group of students made their way from from Doncaster Secondary College to Melbourne Zoo. After a brief stop in the city for food and drinks, the group headed to the Zoo by way of the #58 tram. The route was planned by the students to allow them time to enjoy travelling through the city and stopping at 7-11, while still allowing plenty of time to reach their intended destination.

Once at the Zoo, student leaders for the day collected money from the group to pay for tickets and ensure everyone was given correct change. Once inside, students had free reign to explore the Zoo and its facilities at their own pace, which, because of how quickly and efficiently they had planned the travel, meant they had a good amount of time to enjoy the many sights Melbourne Zoo has to offer.

A combination of perfect weather and the planning undertaken by students in the weeks leading up to the excursion meant that they were able to enjoy the day with their friends, providing a welcomed break from the rigours of school life. The MySelf program as a whole encourages authentic learning, a concept that is epitomised by the students’ ability to enjoy their time at the Zoo without having to worry about upcoming assessment based on what they were seeing. While valuable, the enjoyment factor of excursions can sometimes be undermined by the learning and assessment tasks that often accompany them. In this case, students gain valuable skills from planning in detail their itinerary for the day and working out the logistics of their trip, which when done effectively provides a great learning experience and an enjoyable day for staff and students.
