Focus Strategy: Making connections to self, the world and other texts
Confident readers make personal emotional and intellectual connections to the texts they are reading, and we can encourage this through probing questions.
Select a section from the text your child is reading and stimulate a discussion with them using one of the following probing questions.
Making connections to self
- Has anything like this ever happened to you? How did you feel?
- Have you ever thought or felt this way? Tell me about it.
- Does this remind you of anything in your life? Why is that?
Making connections to the world
- What example of this can you think of in real life? What happened in that example?
- Have you ever come across something like this? What happened?
- When does this happen in our world? What do you think about that?
Making connections to other texts
- Have you ever read something like this before? Tell me about it.
- What other characters do you know who experience this? What happened to them?
- What other stories do you know where something like this happened? Howe are these stories similar/ different?
NB: While some connections are richer than others, the skill of making connections gradually develops through application. We affirm children for the connections they make wherever we can.
