NAPLAN

These tests are now complete and I cannot congratulate our students enough for the way in which they conducted themselves during this week.  Although somewhat stressful for students – they all did their very best!

Gaining an understanding of where students are at with their learning helps us to inform our teaching and learning programs.

I would like to acknowledge and thank Mr Kan, Mr Glenister and the Junior School leadership team for their tremendous support in administering these tests.

STUDY SKILLS

I thank Mr Ben Rood and the Year 9 Student Managers for organizing the study skills parent information evening to be held next Monday evening.

It is quite daunting to know how best to assist our children to study, revise and prepare for upcoming tests and exams.

These evenings are very well received and I thank the parents in advance who attend.

I also wish all students the very best with their pending assessments.

MAGGIE ZHOU (CLASS OF 2016)

I was privileged to attend the Monash University Vice-Chancellors Scholarship for Excellence Awards yesterday to see Maggie Zhou receive her Award.  She is studying a Bachelor of Communication Design and Bachelor of Business.  The whole McKinnon school community wishes her all the very best in her studies and life!!  Well done Maggie.

BENTLEIGH MARKET 40TH ANNIVERSARY

On Sunday 30 April, visitors to the Bentleigh Market were welcomed by four McKinnon Secondary College music students performing a number of classical pieces.

Year 12 students Jessie ParkSally ParkYael Zamir and Izabel Seo had all been invited by the Bentleigh Rotary Club to perform.  They are all VCE Unit 3&4 students and were very well received by the crowd at the venue.  They represented the McKinnon Secondary College community with pride.

McKinnon is aiming to further develop their relationship with the Rotary Club in order to provide our students with opportunities to engage with the wider community while at the same time, encouraging students to take on leadership and teamworking roles.

THE CHARLIE PICKERING SHOW AT McKINNON

On Wednesday 3 May we hosted Tom Gleeson and his crew at our Cross Country event.  The theme was Kids and Gambling.  It was great fun and the students loved being a part of it.  This skit was shown on the Charlie Pickering Show last night on the ABC.  The link to the segment is below:

AMBULANCE COVER

I encourage all parents to have family ambulance cover. Schools do not cover costs of an ambulance if one is called.

Sometimes children present to sick bay and a judgement is made that we call for ambulance assistance. We always do our best to look after all students and we have a duty of care while they are with us. Ambulance cover is quite cheap as opposed to ambulance cost without cover.

I also ask all parents to ensure contact details are accurate and changes to phone numbers, addresses and work details are provided in case of an emergency.

TRAFFIC CONGESTION

At the start and end of each school day the traffic situation outside the school along narrow McKinnon Road is chaotic at best.  Please do not park illegally or in the bus zone.  Try and pick up your children a distance away from the school if possible.  Please do not drive into the school at all and take care on the wet roads.   Thank you for your support in this matter.
