National Child Protection Week

With this week being National Child Protection Week, we have an opportunity to highlight the important role that all members of the community have in ensuring that all children are able to grow up in a nurturing environment which is free from abuse and neglect. The State of Victoria’s 2017 Children Report, states that;

Quality parenting and a nurturing family environment has a profound impact on children’s health and wellbeing, providing them with positive role models and a secure start to life. And while four in five Victorian families enjoy good family functioning, for families that don’t, the impacts on children can be grave. Family violence, child abuse and neglect, can have lasting impacts on children’s health and academic outcomes.

The provision of a nurturing environment is also the responsibility of schools and other organisations working with children and families

As an organisation that provides services and facilities to children, we are not just morally required but legally required to implement the Child Safe Standards. As part of these standards, teachers are legally mandated to report where there is a concern that a child or young person has been, is being, or is at risk of being abused. In addition to this, there is the failure to disclose obligations which apply to all adults, not just professionals who work with children.

In our whole school approach to wellbeing, all members of our community (staff, students, parents) have a responsibility to look out and care for each other. If you notice changes in mood and behaviour that may indicate a member of our community is having difficulties, inquire sensitively if you feel able. If you don’t feel able to inquire, and/or if you still have concerns for an individual’s wellbeing, please refer the matter to the College by contacting a member of the Principal team.
