Principal's Report

Annual Art Exhibition

This week we launched the annual student and staff Art Exhibition.  As always, the standard and the variety of the work on display in “Tunnel Vision” is outstanding.

Involvement in the Arts has been shown to help students in their personal, social, and academic development.  The Arts assists in developing students who are self-driven and able to reflect on and critique their own work.  As a school, we have piloted ‘review and reflect’ as a strategy in all subjects to assist students to develop agency in their learning.  It is also true that Arts students often are more prepared to try new things, manage risks and learn from failure. The Arts also links closely to the Critical and Creative Thinking curriculum.

Critical and Creative Thinking is an important element in the Victorian Curriculum and is being delivered at Doncaster Secondary College across our curriculum from Year 7 to Year 10.  The rationale behind teaching these skills: “Students require explicit support to develop the breadth and depth of their thinking and to take intellectual risks. This attention to thinking helps students to build self-awareness and their capacities for reflection. Developing critical and creative thinking capability is an essential element of developing successful, confident and innovative members of the community” Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority, 2019.

Well done to all staff and students who have their work on display as part of our Exhibition.
