Year 10 'Chinese Market Day'

The Year 10 Chinese class has been learning Chinese currency, fruits and vegetables and negotiating in Chinese. To conclude this unit, students were given an opportunity to bring a variety of fruits and vegetables to class to buy and sell using fake Chinese notes. Everyone was very enthusiastic and successfully set up an amazing “Chinese market” in the classroom. When they were trading, everyone was engaged and trying their best to interact with others in Chinese. After the “market day”, students also were asked to reflect their strengths and weaknesses.

STUDENT REFLECTIONS

Overall I think the market was a great idea, my parents were very interested in how it went and agreed that it was a great way to put the language we have learned to a real-life example ad practice. I learnt (and then forgot) how to say lemon(s) and I learnt that watermelon is expensive and popular. My strengths were in asking how much a product was, reading the signs and raising the price due to high demand. What I could have practised more were the Jiao and Miao characters.

I learnt how to say “我可以买这个…吗?太贵了! 我要买这个。多少钱”  This market day helped me practice pronunciation and how to communicate in a market like an environment. I think I was well prepared enough for a decent conversation.

For the market day activity, I learned how to negotiate prices and use the vocabulary learnt in a mock 'real-life' scenario. This vocabulary is very important because it would be very useful if I ever travelled to China. I learnt how to say 'can I buy this?' and 'how much is this?' in Chinese and had a lot of fun interacting with the other students. To improve, I think I need to gain confidence in my speaking skills and work on accurate pronunciation with correct pinyin.

在上次的中文课,我们角色扮演买和卖中国菜在我们的‘市场’,这个扮演非常的有意思,学生门不仅仅能够吃到甜美的水果,但还可以锻炼中文。我以后再也不吃辣椒了。

在中文课的菜市场中,我学到了很多水果的名称,还有如何和别人交流。
