Year 8 MAV Maths Games

Two of our year 8 international students, Cindy and Danny, recently represented DSC at the Year 8 MAV Maths Games.

Tell us a little about the Year 8 MAV Maths Games?

The MAV Maths Games was a competition held at Pentleigh Essendon Grammar School. It involved 49 secondary schools, making up 98 teams of students. There were three sections; puzzle games, pair games and problem solving.

Why do you choose to get involved in this?

We wanted to get involved because we wanted to improve our abilities by solving more challenging problems. We also made some friends with the students from other schools that we were working with in the team.

Did you enjoy the event?

Our experience of this event was that we enjoyed it. We had fun working with other students who are extremely good at Maths. We also really loved the challenging questions that didn't need formulas. It was a different experience for us and lots of fun!

Winter Garden Adventure

Instead of sitting in the classroom during Homework Club, last week, all students went to the garden to explore the growing winter vegetables. I made a worksheet for them and asked them to do some research before going down to the garden. The students were very excited when they saw the vegetables. They took pictures and googled them online in order to find out what it was.

After collecting their observations, they went back to the classroom and completed the worksheet with the English name and the equivalent name in their own language beside the photos attached. This is a fabulous experience for overseas students to receive some knowledge beyond their textbooks and obtain more life skills.

DSC Chinese Class meet new Chinese International Students

Upon the invitation of Ms Jing, our newly arrived Chinese international students joined one of our Chinese classes and shared their Chinese schooling experience with the local students. They were actively engaged and were keen to talk about their subjects, timetables, and other school-related aspects with their local peers.

“Today’s activity I answered questions about schools back in China. It was very interesting.”

Nancy R. 9K

“I feel very honoured. Local students study Chinese very hard. To see them learning Chinese is like seeing me learning English, so I need to work harder on my English”

Cindy Z. 8L

“I worked closely with local students, this activity also encouraged me to learn English harder.”

Oliver W. 8L

“I’m very happy because I shared my Chinese school experience with local friends.”

Short Story Competition

Berry EAIN of Year 8 was recently awarded 'Winner' for the category 'Year 8 EAL Short Story' in the annual Short Story Competition.

What was your story about?

The title of my short story is “Toughest job in the universe”. My story is about a conflict between mother-in-law and daughter-in-law who do not share the same cultural background and about how difficult it is to have a new job in a new country with a new family.

What is your experience of getting involved in this competition?

It was an opportunity for me to challenge myself and get out of my comfort zone. I realised that short stories are about your own imagination and creativity. I was very fortunate to have people who encouraged and helped me throughout the competition and came along to attend the literacy luncheon to support me. I also look forward to getting involved in other competitions for writing, speaking and other academic subjects.
