2019 Chinese Reading Award

On the 16th of August, I represented Doncaster Secondary College at the Year 7-9 Chinese Reading Competition at Melbourne Grammar School. On the day we were given a script which had both pinyin and characters. We were then given 10 minutes to practice. When I spoke aloud on the stage, it wasn’t as nerve-wracking as I’d thought it would be. The audience contained more than 100 people, and there were around 35 competitors in my year level (year 7). I placed 2nd overall, which I am very proud of. I have learnt lots from this experience, and hope to compete again next year.

Year 8 Boys Soccer

Earlier this term, the Year 8 boys soccer team competed in the Regional Soccer Finals. A goal in the last minute of the game, from a corner, resulted in DSC winning the finals. The students will be competing in the State Soccer Finals in the last week of term, on Monday, 16 September.

Until then, the boys are continuing to train hard and are working on improving their game plan!

Year 8 STEAM Project

On Friday, 23 August, the class of 8F with Ms McLeish and Ms Katiforis went on a very educational excursion to a reverse art shop to collect materials for our STEAM projects. Steam includes science, technology, engineering, art, and maths. This topic is very important since students can express themselves in many of their passions and work together to make a machine. Each student took a personality quiz to see what they are good at and how they can help out their team.

The project aims to make a Rube Goldberg inspired chain reaction machine to pop a balloon each group had to come up with a machine with at least 8 stages but the result must pop a balloon and only 1 contact of human touch can be involved with starting the project.

Each group had a chance to explore the reverse art shop and collect useful materials. This shop is filled with materials that have been recycled by factories and shops.

After everyone got to collect their materials, we then took a bus and a train back to Eastland we got an hour and a half to have some lunch and just explore in groups. Soon enough we all met back together safely and took a train and a bus back to school.

This excursion was very fun and all the students learned many new things, for example, we never knew this recycling shop existed. We learned about measurements and how much of each material we needed we also learned a lot about teamwork. All students got to express their ideas and creativity in their individual ways.

Year 9 Native Wildlife Session

Recently, Year 9 students had the opportunity to get close up with some native wildlife. The session was focused on the food chain and the relationship types between different organisms.
