Drama, Dance and Music
I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to the Performing Arts page, it is here that you will see what is happening in the creative arts fields of John Fawkner College and how our students are developing their skills in this area, and the connections that we are making with the wider community in Fawkner.
Some of the exciting things that have taken place so far in 2020 is firstly the appointment of instrumental music teacher Dan Nilsson, Dan comes to us with a wealth of knowledge and expertise and has worked in various schools across Melbourne, we are thrilled to have him on the team. We currently have over twenty of our students who are learning an instrument and even though at the moment lessons look slightly different the students are loving having an outlet to continue to craft their skills. We are looking forward to seeing how this program will grow in the next few years.
The classroom music program has recently purchased a set of IPADS, we believe that in order for this subject area to shine it needs to be at the forefront of technology. Students who are in the year 9/10 elective will be using these IPADS and software such as ‘Garageband’ to compose their own tracks and explore their creative minds. The students are eager to get back to at school learning so they are able to begin to create!
In our Drama and Dance classes students have been given the opportunity to work on learning and identifying the elements that make up these largely physical and group based subjects. It has been a good energy outlet for students and the teachers in these classes have been impressed by some of the end products that have been displayed, in particular our Year 7’s use of dramatic elements in their scripts and the bravery of those who have got up and performed in front of their classes. Well done!
Even though at the moment these subjects may look different in remote learning, I have been encouraged to see how students have used their creative brains to still be highly engaged in the learning. From students who are using online storyboards to draft their scenes in Drama to those who are filming their rhythm patterns in Music or creating original Tik Toks for their dance assessments. I believe this is a great opportunity for the performing arts space to shine in a different way, but I do look forward to being back in a physical classroom space soon. Until then keep those creative juices flowing!
