Years 9 & 10 Update

Lockdown 2.0

Welcome all to our first installment of the John Fawkner College newsletter. I am pleased to be reporting to you, despite the current climate.

With all that is going on, it is great to be able to reflect and communicate some of the great work happening with the Year 9 and 10 cohort throughout this period.

Firstly, I wanted to say how great it was to see everyone back in school for the end of term 2 and start of term 3. It was interesting to reflect on and talk about the different experiences of the lock down and time away from school, whilst also rewarding the lock down legends from this period.

I was privileged to move around the school to award the following students their certificate and voucher for the canteen as a result of their great work:

9A - Ibrahim Kaddour and Hannah Swift

9B - Mohid Shah and Indiana Waterman

9C - Serena Ahmed, Rowda Khalil and Abbas Matoory

10A - Yuanhao Gao, Valentina Khwaja, Ata Nader, Tyson Souleles and Yunus Akinci

10B - Edan Bavelock, Maximus Hastings-Rumoro and Joseph Vasile

10C - Kaan Pekin and Bilal Selek

Although it was great to see everyone back and a buzz around the school, all good things must come to an end as they say, so we find ourselves currently navigating back through remote and flexible learning. I have been extremely lucky to work with such a great supportive staff throughout this period and I encourage that if there has been any teachers who you have particularly appreciated the work of, that you reach out  and let them know.

Many students have communicated with me some teachers who are doing a great job, one of which is Mr Owens who has set up the Houli-Saad Academy for a small group of Year 9-11 students. As a result, these students are involved in a 7 week program online where they will interact, tell stories and develop ideas with AFL footballers, past players and specialists in the area of football and life. Well done to the students selected in that program and I hope you get a lot out of it.

As some parting advice, I want to encourage all students and teachers to make the most of this period. Spend time with family, stay home and stay safe so that we can all be back together in the classroom. Do some work around the house, interact with people online, respect your teachers and sign into all your sessions to get the most out of your learning through this current climate.

Signing off for another month, look forward to next time.
