NUMERACY - Colleen Monaghan

Webinar for teaching multiplication & division

This is a free webinar that Dr. Paul Swan has done for parents to help them while working at home with remote learning. It is worth a watch. Especially for parents of students in Years 3 - 6 as they are currently learning about multiplying and dividing.

The students who are currently doing the Australasian Problem Solving Mathematical Olympiad have been doing really well with these weekly problems of Game 24.

I am putting one up a week for you all to see if you can find solutions. There is more than one possible way to use all 4 numbers and any process to arrive at 24. All numbers must be used.

Good Luck,

Mrs Monaghan

Scienceworks LIVE

BLAST OFF LIVE

Our school has been chosen to trial an online Scienceworks Show titled: Blast Off Live. Last Wednesday some students from Year 3/4 participated in this online Scienceworks Show. The show was adapted to an interactive virtual learning format by using a ZOOM  Meet where the students were able to discover how rockets work and find out about the forces involved in getting rockets into space.

Students also examine the effect of space travel on the body and learn what it is like to live in micro-gravity conditions.

The show explained the main principle of rocket propulsion using many demonstrations and the famous Newtonian law of 'equal and opposite forces'. The show also covered the history of rockets and how astronauts train and live in a weightless environment.

At home activities

There are plenty of fun DIY activities that can be done from home to encourage children to become more interested in STEM. The GiST has some interesting activities to try at home: Fireworks in a bottle, Avalanche, Fog chamber, Naked egg, Mould terrarium, Black magic, Paper airplanes, Leaning tower of pasta, (just to name a few).

Music - Michele Hedley

Foundation – 2

In Music this term, the F-2 students are learning about the beat and tempo of music.  We are also exploring our emotions in Music to fit in with the students’ learning in other areas of the curriculum.

Year 3/4 GT are also exploring the emotion in music by learning about Blues and Jazz music.

Year 5/6 students are learning about how music can reflect a mood or emotion by exploring different instruments used in orchestras to create different musical sounds
