Bridging EAL Poetry Competition

In Term 3, Bridging EAL students learned about figurative language to reflect on and write poems about their experience of the pandemic. This culminated in a virtual poetry reading competition with a live audience. Congratulations to all the students who participated. The judges were amazed by both the creativity and delivery of your poems. Thank you to Miss Dewhurst for being our special guest judge. Here are the winning entries.

Another Chance

By Ahmad Yasin Al Akza

The nights are becoming so nostalgic

While the days are so tragic

Some, desire of those old days

While others beg for the new one with new ways

It’s neither too late nor unchangeable

Hold the conditions as they are

COVID have left us blind

We should be aware of who we are

Which will create a better humankind

It’s neither too late nor unchangeable

The virus itself is the earth’s doctor

While on earth we are the destructor

Not one single of us can live alone

Yet the earth is not our own

It’s neither too late nor unchangeable

If love can ease unbeatable obstacle

If the COVID itself, “a virus” is profitable

Why we as the greatest creature can’t be constructive?

Why we as the supreme creature can’t at least be appreciative?

Yet, it’s neither too late nor unchangeable

From the tears, we are learning

From the past, we are standing

COVID needs to be defeated

Perhaps once we should all change our fate

Because it’s never too late nor unchangeable

My Sadness

By Daisy Nguyen

Sunlight shines through the window,

The birds sing and try to wake me up,

I sigh and turn my face to the pillow,

No, I don't want to get up!

Reach out and connect the cables,

Every moment becomes boring to keep daylong,

Turn on the computer and sit at the table,

I haven’t seen my friends for so long.

Refuse to exercise during PE class,

Try to stand up and spin around,

My head is empty like a brass,

Play the music and turn up the sound.

No longer hear the teachers complain,

You must be at school on time,

Get it all out of my brain,

Leave everything behind and enjoy lunchtime.

Hospital Staff

By David Chea

Help me! Help me! patient said

Doctor and nurse rush to help

They are heroes better than superman

Destroy all the beast that our body have

Oh no our heroes said we’ll try our best

No matter what it might take.

We don’t have superpowers but

We’ll try to keep you safe.

Saving people is a hero’s duty

Not just superman but also the angel of mercy.

they are Doctors and caregivers of a nursey

They’ll be there whenever you need

Praying and hoping for help

Frontline workers are on the steps

They’re trying to get ready,

With all their the power, they will prep

ICU that’s where they’ll keep you

To keep you safe from that menacing flu

Nobody wants to lose you

Because you are precious and loved too

Testing, waiting for the result

Negative, got no virus, you’ll be exult

The answer will be on a call

The whole process is quite professional

Angst, you feel, do I have it or not?

How would I know what I’ve got?

Runny nose, sore throat, temperature is hot

The doctor said don’t worry, looks like the virus hasn’t caught

Lack of rest, lack of sleep

Doctors and nurses are getting weak

Some of them caught the virus too

It happened because they just want to save you

Sacrifice their lives to help you

But if only you knew

Because you are flouting, didn’t follow the rule

No distancing, handwashing or masking, just being cruel

iCreate Construction & Technology

The iCreate Construction and Technology students have been busily completing products that address a design brief. During remote learning, the students were exploring a range of design and drawing tools such as Tinker CAD and freehand drawing skills to plan for a range of products. As unrealistic as it was working in a virtual space at home, the products began to merge in the classroom over the last three weeks. The students worked collaboratively on projects that required mapping out ideas, selecting appropriate timber and assembling the work. Many students skilled up for the first time in learning to use power tools, machinery as well as basic and complex equipment. The products were finished in 'Pop Art' and 'Memphis Designs', using spray paint and acrylic paint.

Congratulations to the iCreate class, they mastered one semester's work in three weeks which is an extraordinary effort!!
