Assistant Principal's Report

Mr Mark Henderson

Welcome Back!

It has been amazing to see all of our students return to face-to-face learning. As a teacher, nothing can beat seeing students in the classroom and enjoying their breaks around the school. All students have shown a high level of maturity and care for others since their return to school.

We are all very proud and grateful for their patience.

Headstart 2020

This year as we move into the 2021 academic year, our Headstart program is going to look slightly different. Instead of all students in Years 8 to 10 starting their new subject curriculum early, we are going to run a new program during Headstart, which will look like this:

Week 1 - (Beginning Monday 30 November 2020): Academic Skills Week

During Academic Skills Week, students will learn the key skills and learning habits that will make you successful in each of your subjects. You may learn some skills and strategies in one class that you will be able to transfer in to many of your classes. Examples of skills might be working as part of a team, using a dictionary effectively or academic research skills.

Week 2 - (Beginning Monday 7 December): Personal Development Skills Week

During Personal Development Skills Week, students will be given the opportunity to learn key ‘life’ skills and choose from a range of workshops aimed at building personal development skills. Examples of workshops might be first aid, cooking, fitness and career planning. Your teachers are keen to share with you their skills and passions, to teach you skills that you would not normally learn in normal classes. Workshops will include:

Week 3 – (Beginning Monday 14 December): Activities week

Like in previous years, the year will end with a range of fun activities, although we will need to wait and see if COVID restrictions will allow excursions. Fingers crossed!

Chinese (non-background) Reading Competition of Victoria:

On behalf of non-background students at Westall, Mearlea Seang (Year 7) , Jolie Nnika Sothyna (Year 8) and Sothica Lim (Year 9) participated in the 2020 Chinese (Non-background) Reading Competition of Victoria on  16th October (Friday) remotely. Our students demonstrated their excellent skills and confidence in the state competition and earned fantastic results as following:

Mearlea Seang (Year 7) : Mendelian Award (Top 10). Jolie Nnika Sothyna (Year 8): Participation Award. Sothica Lim (Year 9): The First Award (Top 1).

This is the first time that WSC has won the first award across Victoria for a decade. We are very proud of our students for striving for success during this tough time. A big thank you to Ms Minnie Zeng, whose passion and encouragement make it possible for our students to experience Chinese culture and learn the language so brilliantly at WSC!

Melbourne Writers Festival

📖📚 Congratulations Monineath Seang! 📖📚 Earlier this year, the Melbourne Writers Festival and Study Melbourne hosted their annual story writing competition for International Students living and studying in Victoria. Students were asked to envisage a Bold New World and submit a written story or visual work representing their vision of an ideal future as the world resets after the global pandemic.

Year 9 student, Monineath Seang, was shortlisted for the High School category and took home the Overall People’s Choice Award for her piece, My Opportunity. Congratulations Monineath!
