Music

What's been happening in the Music classroom?

It has been great to see children returning to hands-on music activities, and especially working on combined tasks with their peers. F/1s have been learning all about the orchestra and are listening to some wonderful music in Carnival of the Animals. They were encouraged to move around to the music as their favourite bird (Aviary) and favourite fish (Aquarium). I'm amazed at how much they know about animals! 2/3s are continuing with recorder and have started an interesting activity using the letters of the marimba. Over the last couple of weeks, individual students have volunteered to call out letters for the others to echo back - we have had some interesting compositions! 4/5/6 have now started singing and playing bits of their chosen song, and will continue to work on these songs in their class groups for the upcoming concert (more on this below).

Choir

We've had two rehearsals since returning to face-to-face learning, and the children are already able to sing through the two songs we have worked on so far! It's great to hear them using their head voice and using such expression when they sing. Have a listen to the excerpt below of the classic song "Mad World" - we were working on memorising the chorus and singing a part of it in harmony. Not bad for a second rehearsal!

2020 Concert

As it is an even year, at Newlands PS this means a Concert Year.

With current government restrictions in place we have had to coordinate alternative concert solutions.

A “virtual” concert is currently being proposed and will be put together by Blueprint Studios in Coburg. Depending on the level of restrictions that are in place in term 4 (which is the time that the Concert was scheduled), the final product will be presented to the community in one of two ways: 1. Outdoor screening on the school grounds; or 2. As a stream for families to watch at home and/or to share with extended family and friends.

Each homeroom grade (or colour group in the F/1s) will be preparing a performance item during their Music and Performing Arts classes over the course of term 3. Class teachers will also be assisting their grade to prepare for the performance, and Performance Captains will be organising “linking” content to be filmed and inserted in between each item.

Early in term 4, a Filming Day will be organised, during which a “film studio” will be set up in an area of the school, and each grade will take turns performing and recording their items. Blueprint will edit the footage and create our final “concert movie”.

There will be more detail issued early in term 3 - no dates have yet been scheduled or confirmed. Please direct any questions to Katey or David, who are both co-ordinating this year’s concert.
