We’d like to introduce you to two young local heroes: Donna Camilleri and Mackenzie Warden, who are senior VCAL students at Matthew Flinders Girls Secondary College. With leadership from Donna and Mackenzie, their VCAL class chose Geelong Sustainability as its charity of choice to benefit from the proceeds of the Matthew Flinders’ annual Pop-Up Market. In advocating for Geelong Sustainability, Donna and Mackenzie told fellow students “We love their values and find the work they do extremely important for the future of the Geelong community.”
The class worked in small teams of 2 or 3 students creating fun products to sell at the Pop-Up Market. The girls were required to upcycle their creations from donated goods or items found at op-shops. A variety of items were upcycled including: fabrics, cups, glasses, wool, jewellery, jars, CDs, DVDs and many other household objects.
Finding new uses for old objects is a major strategy in managing waste. Remember the Rs
Rethink – Refuse – Reduce – Re-use – Repair – Re-gift – Recycle – Rot
Their upcycled designs were so impressive the class raised an amazing $670 for Geelong Sustainability. So our wholehearted thanks go to Mackenzie, Donna, their class mates and teacher, Kylie McMillan. We promise to put your donation to very good use!

For our Senior VCAL project we are supporting the Share the Dignity program #ITSINTHEBAG. We are reaching out to our community and asking for donations of everyday essentials for women. The donations will go towards women who experience homelessness or women who are at risk or whom have experienced domestic violence. All donations MUST be sealed and unused. Possible donations could include: shampoo and conditioner, soaps, pads and tampons, deodorants and toothpaste and toothbrushes. Extras include: face wipes, meal vouchers, scarfs, socks and undies, hair brushes and hair ties, tissues, or books. If you have a handbag you no longer use that is in great condition please also place these in the donation box and we can package the essential items into these handbags.
Donation boxes have been placed on both campuses – outside the HFC office and in the House Leaders office. Please support this wonderful program and help make a difference for women in our community.
