From The Assistant Principal

The college open day and night was a great success and it was very heartening to see so many of our current students feel proud of their college and they were the finest ambassadors we could ask for. Staff were fantastic in their efforts and I have no doubt that we were welcoming and demonstrated to the community what a great place Carwatha is.

A reminder to all parents that we ask for their support with the college uniform – that at all times must be worn and must follow the specifications as listed in the college diary and on the website. Please note that hoodies worn under jackets are not uniform and should not be worn. It is also not acceptable to have bright artificially coloured hair. Should you have any question about uniform please do not hesitate to contact me or one of the year level coordinators. We thank all the parents that support us and work hard to ensure that their child is in full school uniform and at all times is well presented.

COMPASS

Compass allows parents to be very informed of how their child is progressing. Parents and staff can now email each other directly from compass and this will facilitate more direct conversation. Parents are asked to check compass for attendance – where they can see lesson by lesson, or daily the attendance of their child. Staff have been recording lesson plan goals or learning intentions and success criteria on compass – which allows students to know exactly what they should be learning and if they have mastered it properly. I encourage you to ask you child questions about their learning and get them to show you the lesson plans that staff develop on compass. It is very important that parents stay connected and involved in their child’s education – especially in secondary as though they may not express it – they still need support and guidance.

SRC Report

On Thursday 4th of May the SRC committee held a casual dress day with a denim theme.

SRC also held a sausage sizzle for both the primary and secondary students during lunch time, which was very successful with all sausages and drinks being sold out. Music was played, and many students enjoyed their time outside in the sun relaxing. We would like to thank the student body for supporting this SRC event.

SRC students were also involved in our Open Day, which was held on the 9th of May. The vibrant school community was in action that day and parents could observe and interact with students engaged in their dynamic learning environment. For the evening tour, the SRC gathered together for a meeting where we spoke about the importance of our roles so that the parents were able to view the wide number of positions our school has to offer. This event was a wonderful opportunity to experience a day in the life of Carwatha College P-12, and SRC students thouroughly enjoyed sharing their wonderful journey with prospective parents.

Ipad Information

iPad Hire

Apple has changed its model availability as of the beginning of May. The cheapest model (iPad 5th Generation) and hard case will now cost $70 per semester or $140 per year.

When parents request iPad hire outside of the normal distribution period (beginning of the school year) there is always a delay in providing the device. The school does not carry stock.

8A Science Experiment – Expansion And Contraction

On Tuesday May 9, 8A science students did an experiment about states of matter, regarding how they expand or contract. Students in groups performed experiments demonstrating the expansion and contraction of a gas and a liquid, and watched a demonstration about the expansion and contraction a solid. To be successful in this experiment, students needed to observe and record results accurately and have knowledge of the particle theory, kinetic energy and the terms ‘expansion’ and ‘contraction’. Thank you to Huy and Ashton for assisting me in packing up the experiment.

8C Science Experiment - Dry Ice

On Friday May 5th, 8C students participated in a dry ice experiment. They learnt that dry ice is frozen carbon dioxide, not frozen water. The focus of this experiment was understanding that a change in heat can cause substances to change their state of matter. Students saw dry ice turn straight from a solid to a gas, without becoming a liquid, like water would. They then answered questions based on their observations. Did you know – dry ice can be used to make beer, kill warts and eliminate bed bugs?!

From The Year 10 Coordinator

For the last two weeks our year 10 students have been working closely with teachers, preparing for one of life’s nerve wrecking activities, ‘The Job Interview’.

Preparations began with a launch to outline the program goals, activities and timeline. Job applications are now being polished up, with the final edits being applied. Mock interview preparation was our assembly focus last Thursday. I’m confident that by the time the BIG DAY arrives, Thursday 18 May, our students will be well prepared, with resumes in hand, dressed to impress, and well-rehearsed.

All our teachers, and students alike, are looking forward to seeing our year 10’s looking super special, in their appropriate interview clothes, as they walk into the interviews. I encourage all parents and family adults to find an opportunity to discuss the “Winning the Job” process with your child. Share experiences and provide the support and confidence that will surely be welcomed and comforting.

At our last Year Level Assembly, I had the pleasure of awarding many certificates in recognition of our student’s accomplishments in either academic achievement, community service, attendance record, subject awards, etc…

I’m pleased to say that more than half the year level was awarded certificates for greater than 90% school attendance.

Year 11 Excursion - Healesville Sanctuary

On Friday April 28th, Yr 11 Biology students went to Healesville Sanctuary for the day. The focus of the day was how animals adapt to their environment, and what homeostatic mechanisms they possess to help them survive. Students first had an educator-led session in the morning, and then watched the famous ‘Spirits of the sky’ show. A well-deserved lunch was eaten, and then students investigated an Australian animal at the sanctuary as their focus for the afternoon. Students then completed a booklet at school, as part of an outcome on Homeostasis and Adaptations. Thank you to Mr Murphy for attending and the students for proudly representing our college in public.
