Walk Safely To School Day

WE’RE TAKING IT IN OUR STRIDE ON FRIDAY, 19 MAY2017

Well it’s that time of year again when our school seriously starts talking aboutwalking!

Not only is walking a wonderful way to get you where you want to be, it also gets your health – and your child’s health on the right track too. So that’s why this year our school is participating in National Walk Safely to School Day on Friday 19 May2017.

Walk Safely to School Day asks that we all consider our transport habits and try to incorporate more walking as part of a healthy, active way to get around. And although walking all the way to school isn’t realistic for many of us, it’s quite easy to figure out how you can build a walk into your family’s dailyroutine.

You can teach your child the healthy habit of walking more

  • Walking with them the whole way to school
  • If they get the bus or train, walk past your usual stop and get on at the next stop
  • If you have to drive, park the car a few blocks away from the school and walk the rest of the way.

Regular exercise like walking with your child not only helps them (and you!) beat chronic problems like obesity, heart disease, behavioural and mental health issues and diabetes. It also gives you a great opportunity to teach your child safe ways to behave around roads andtraffic.

Remember, Active Kids are Healthy Kids so get planning your own Walk Safely to School Day journey for Friday 19 May2017!

Kiss asthma goodbye this World Asthma Day

Asthma Australia has come up with a great app for young people with Asthma!

Why was an asthma app for young people developed?

The National Young People and Asthma Strategy (NYPAS) is managed by Asthma Australia under the Asthma Child and Adolescent Program (ACAP) and funded by the Australian Government.

A major survey of young people aged 12-25 years was undertaken in 2014 by Young and Well CRC for Asthma Australia.  Results and recommendations indicated that internet options for health advice were preferred by young people to other interventions.

Mobile phone apps are a well-used tool by this age group and Asthma Australia supported the development of an app specific to young people with asthma through its research fund. This work was undertaken by a team from the University of Sydney led by Associate Professor Lorraine Smith and included Professor Susan Sawyer, Dr Juliet Foster and Associate Professor Rafael Calvo as contributory investigators.

How was the app developed?

The development of this new app included clinician feedback and most importantly, the involvement of young people with asthma via focus groups to help ensure the app is relevant to their needs.

The app includes a goal-setting function that incorporates gamification to make the app more attractive and to enhance the user’s experience and motivation.

Our survey of young people with asthma also showed that approximately 50% have a mental health issue, double that of the general population of young people.  This figure aligns with similar research for other chronic conditions. The app has therefore been designed to also help young people with the psychological impacts of asthma.

A competition for young people to name the app resulted in the catchy and somewhat cheeky title, ‘Kiss My Asthma’.  The app is being launched today on World Asthma Day, 2 May 2017, at a climbing gym in Sydney with young people from the focus groups climbing (along with two brave members of the app team).

What does the app include?

The app features:

  • access to your Asthma Action Plan
  • the ability to track your asthma symptoms, severity and attacks, making it easy to inform your doctor or specialist accurately about your asthma
  • mood tracker
  • setting goals and receive support from one of the app’s monster assistants
  • reminders to take your asthma preventer medications
  • Asthma First Aid instructions and emergency contacts
  • finding out more about asthma, asthma medications and devices, and managing anxiety

Where can you download the app?

Kiss My Asthma is available on the App Store and GooglePlay now!
