Australian Maths Challenge

28 students participated in the Australian Maths Challenge. The challenge aims to broaden interest and awareness of mathematics, challenge students to solve mathematical problems and promotes enjoyment. The students had 4 problems to work through, accessing resources independently and working with peers to solve the problems.  Here are some reflections from the students themselves.

I really enjoyed the maths challenge, although it was a big step up for me in maths, I liked working with other people.

Isabella - Fisher 10

I thought the maths challenge was quite challenging but was quite enjoyable working with other year 6's.

Tahlia - Fisher 10

It was really challenging and fun which helped me improve in my problem solving skills.

Marvin - Fisher 13

The Australian Maths Challenge was a great experience because we had challenging questions that I wasn't used to. There were 4 questions with 4 problems to solve.

Claire - Fisher 13

I thought the maths challenge was a good way to see how good your word problem solving skills are. Also it tested you on how good your explanation was so you know where to improve next time. Overall the maths challenge was a fun and wonderful experience and I would definitely suggest it to other people to do it.

Spencer - Fisher 15

I thought it was good because it gave me a challenge and took a decent amount of time and was a hard challenge. I would like to do it again to better my score and improve.

Oskar - Fisher 15

In order to enter into this learning successfully, students must have an excellent knowledge of multiplication and division facts and be able to recognise relationships between numbers Eg.  Be able to look at 12  and know automatically that it can be divided by many different numbers (1,2,3,4,6,12). Some students continue to be supported to improve their fluency with these facts.

Students are encouraged to use the personal target task incorporated in their fortnightly Homework Grid to practise and improve automaticity of their multiplication fact knowledge. Games and on line resources  are available for students for support with this.

Many students are anxious at the thought of Algebra, but find out pretty quickly that it can be a very fun unit due to the challenges presented and because of the variety of strategies they trial such as  the "Guess and Check" and "Make a Table" strategies.

Our learning will focus on many different real-life problems involving the Mathematics concepts taught so that students understand the purpose of their learning and know how to apply it to different contexts.
