Women's Inter-School Golf Challenge Cup

I am delighted to report to the Kilbreda Past Students Alumni that Kilbreda College is represented in an annual golf event for past students of thirty major Victorian independent girls schools. The Women's Inter-School Golf Challenge Cup event is played annually and each school is represented by a team of four players.

The event has a long and fascinating history commencing in 1929 when a committee of twelve was formed to represent different schools for the purpose of fostering teamwork in women’s golf and to support a charity benefitting women or children. For many years the event was known under the names of Table Talk or Sun-News Pictorial Cup but more recently it was renamed the Women's Inter-School Golf Challenge Cup and the present charity is "Cottage By The Sea" at Queenscliff.

The annual competition expanded and is now open to players who are past students of one of the thirty member schools and who hold a current GA Handicap of 35 or less. Each school has a representative on the committee and that person has the responsibility to attend the annual meeting, support the charity and to liaise and enter a team of four players.

The total Stableford scores of the four players represents the school's results. The trophies are donated and each winning team member receives a silver spoon and the schools name is engraved on the base of the magnificent antique solid silver cup trophy which was made in London in 1827 in the reign of George IV. There are also trophies for individual winners in two sections.

The competition is played at different golf clubs, and the 87th event was held in April 2016 at The Metropolitan Golf Club where the Abby Coombes, Maria Vines, Mary Calman and Susie Dixon represented Kilbreda.

On hearing about the event, and being a keen golfer, I wrote to the committee in 1999 with a request for Kilbreda College to be included and eventually I was contacted when a member school resigned. Over many years, I have been fortunate to know and meet past Kilbreda students who play golf so I appreciate the opportunity to promote this event and ask for any golfers who would be interested in participating in the annual golf day to contact me. The cost of the day is the responsibility of the player and includes the green fees and lunch.

The annual event has become a day which everyone looks forward to and enjoys, and it is a privilege to have the opportunity to represent the old school. My aim as the school representative  is to see the name KILBREDA COLLEGE engraved on the magnificent trophy!
