Mellor 1/2- Maths

Mathematics

Mathematics in semester 1 across all year 1/2 classes will focus on the areas of number and measurement. We will be explicitly teaching the concept and developing childrens understanding around Mass and Length. The content will inquire into a range of real life situations that are both teacher and student directed. In this way, learning is real and has a purpose for students to know and do.

Year 1

Expected skills, knowledge, understandings, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning for Semester 1

-  skip count by 2's, 5's, 10's

- read, write and order numbers to 100

- count collections and partition numbers using place value to 100 using, hundreds, tens and ones

Patterns and Algebra

- investigate and describe number patterns with objects

- represent and solve simple addition and subtraction problems using a range of strategies including counting on, partitioning and rearranging parts

Using Units Of Measure

- measure and compare the lengths and capacities of pairs of objects using uniform informal units

- compare masses of objects using balance scales/ hefting

Year 2

Expected skills, knowledge, understandings, fluency, problem-solving and reasoning for Semester 1

Number and Place Value

- skip count by 2's, 3's, 5's, 10's

- read, write and order numbers to 1000

-partition and rearrange collections of objects to 1000 using, hundreds, tens and ones

Patterns and Algebra

-describes patterns with number and identifies missing elements

-explores the connection between addition and subtraction and solves simple addition and subtraction problems

Using Units Of Measure

-compare and orders several shapes and objects based on mass using appropriate uniform informal units leading to formal measurements

-compares masses of objects using balance scales and other real life measuring equipment

Demonstrates counting patterns

counts collections to 100 and beyond

compares and orders shapes and objects based on volume and capacity

Vocabulary

Building children's vocabulary and technical language is crucial, giving children the language required to articulate their mathematical understanding.

Mass Vocabulary

weigh, weighs, balances

heavy/light, heavier/lighter, heaviest/lightest

balance, scales, weight

kilogram (kg), half-kilogram, gram (g)

Length Vocabulary

length, width, height, depth

long, short, tall, high, low

wide, narrow, deep, shallow, thick, thin

longer, shorter, taller, higher, longest, shortest, tallest, highest, far, near, close.

Natural Maths Focus

Children will tune into key maths concepts,  involved in mental routines- a small 10 minute concentrated teaching block targeting new skills. They will them be engaged in problematised situations -  open ended tasks related to real life situations and how to apply these stategies in our world. Reflection is fundamental at the end of a maths block which consolidates children's understanding of concepts introduced.
