Room 5a Update

Room 5A had a great day at Sports Day, the students demonstrated  great persistence and were all supportive of one another. This term we have been using the blu-bots, the students are becoming confident with navigating them and enjoy the challenge of programming them. We have also started story writing, we listened to the story of the Three Little Pigs and then the children had the opportunity to create their own fairy-tale.

Room 10 Poets

This term room 10 has been exploring poetry tools and different styles of poetry. We have looked at haikus, limericks and using similes to describe people, places and objects.  We have been studying writer/ director Tim Burton and his quirky style of poetry. We have constructed poetry booklets full of our own characters and poems written in Tim Burton’s style.  This has been really enjoyable because it gives us the opportunity to express different emotions creatively.

Paper-Making

Last Friday, the students of Room 32 and 33 participated in a recycled paper-making workshop as part of their Geography topic on sustainability. The students learnt that various things can be added to a pulp to make interesting and decorative paper: this even included the leaves of banana plants, snake skins, and flies!

Thank you to the people at KESAB who funded not only the paper-making workshop, but also the Wipe Out Waste play on the same week. A big thanks to the parents and grandparents who also helped out.

Wipe Out Waste

On the 8th of November, the R-3 students attended a Wipe-Out-Waste play. The play aimed to teach the students about the ways we can reduce the amount of waste produced on a daily basis.

Wally and the Wipe Out Waste Wizard entertained the students as they educated the students about how we can recycle various materials, receive money for deposit containers, use less plastic in our lunches, and compost our food scraps.

At the school we have various material collection boxes. This includes a green scraps bin in each class, paper recycling boxes, and crates in the yard for empty 10-cent containers. We also learnt that straws and bottle top lids can be placed in empty plastic milk containers. When the container is filled, simply place the container into your recycling bin.

The next challenge is to reduce the amount of plastic that are in our lunches. Soft plastic like zip-lock bags cannot be recycled – they simply go to landfill. Next year, we will be asking classes to undertake the landfill reduction challenge. Stay tuned for that one.

Room 4

For maths this term, room 4 have been learning how to program Blue-Bots to move in different directions. The children have used pop sticks to create mazes that they then have to navigate their Blue-Bots through. Using the Blue-Bots, children learn directionality, planning, sequencing, counting, persistence and how to work together!

Room 19

English

This term in English, students have been learning about procedure writing. We have learned by observing and explaining to each other a simple and, in this case, extremely delicious task. Room 19 students were able to write a procedure for making fairy bread, giving a detailed step by step explanation of what, how and when ingredients were added. I hope to see these budding chefs assisting in your kitchen soon!!

Room 17

Room 17 students have been having lots of fun learning about materials that don’t mix well, and others that are difficult to separate. Through hands-on investigations, students explore how changing the quantities of materials in a mixture can alter its properties and uses. We have also been learning how to write procedures. Here are some we have done.

Adding Mentos to coke.

Room 31 Chemical Science

This term we are learning about chemical sciences. A man named Frank came to do Frank Lab on Legs, which taught us about solids, liquids and gases. Everyone enjoyed it. We learnt about water molecules and the different stages where they turn into solids, liquids and gases. We have done a group of experiments teaching us about solids, liquids and gases. We’ve done lots of group activities where we’ve had to work as a team. One of the experiments we’ve done was guessing what liquid it was and which one was not a liquid. We’ve done lots of group activities where we’ve had to work as a team. Another experiment we’ve done was called tissues in a cup. You needed two tissues, a deep container, water to fill the container and two clear, see-through cups. We had to predict what would happen. We have really enjoyed learning about chemical science this term.
