JEWISH HOLOCAUST MUSEUM

Year 11 History Excursion

On Monday 18 May, the Year 11 Twentieth Century History students visited the Jewish Holocaust Centre in Elsternwick.

The Holocaust Museum was founded by survivors and their families of the attempted Genocide that occurred in Nazi occupied Europe.

We started off the visit with an interesting, but confronting presentation of some background information and an overview of what the Holocaust was and what it involved.

The students were lucky enough to hear the experience of Abe Goldberg, a Holocaust survivor who was part of the resistance movement in the Lodz Ghetto and later sent to Chelmno concentration camp.  Abe shared his horrific story and then proceeded to show the students around the museum, which included artifacts that he had donated to the museum.

The day ended with Jordan Kelso lighting a Remembrance Candle on behalf of Lilydale High School.

We left the city thinking about Abe’s inspiring message:

“No matter how rainy or grey your day is, the sun will always shine through.”
