2015 PREMIER'S VCE AWARDS

Congratulations Mitchell Hatfield, Year 12

On Wednesday 3 June, I had the pleasure of attending the VCE Premier's Awards at the Melbourne Convention Centre to see one of our students, Mitchell Hatfield of Year 12, receive an award for Systems Engineering.

Mitchell completed this subject in 2014 as a Year 11 student and produced a near perfect 49 out of 50 study score.

In 2014, over 47,000 students undertook Year 12 subjects, of those only 279 Premier's Awards were awarded. This is quite an achievement that takes a great deal of work and dedication. We are very proud of Mitchell and congratulate him on this outstanding achievement.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank and congratulate Veronica Lovell, Mitchell's Systems Engineering teacher, for her commitment to ensuring that Mitchell and her students had every opportunity to succeed.

WELCOME TO NEW STAFF

I would like to welcome two new teaching staff members to Lilydale High School:

Paul Singh                       Humanities

Amy Walton                    Maths / Science

Paula and Amy are currently settling into Lilydale High School with the assistance of their colleagues and students.

EXAMINATIONS

Year 10, 11 and 12 exams are upon us.  All students have been provided with the timetable and expectations.

The General Achievement Test (GAT) for all students studying a VCE Unit 3 & 4 subject took place on Wednesday this week.

NEVR YOUTH CONCERT

Lilydale High School recently had 4 students represent us at the North Eastern Victoria Region Youth Music Concert.  Our representatives were:

  • Nick Rowe                      Year 8
  • Liam Huddleston        Year 9
  • Celeste Wells                 Year 10
  • Tim Huddleston           Year 11

They are 4 incredibly talented musicians and gained valuable knowledge in the process including both school based and regional rehearsals.

UNIFORM

I would like to thank parents and guardians for their support in ensuring students are in correct uniform. It is a requirement of Lilydale High School that students are in the prescribed uniform everyday and if they are occasionally out of uniform and note is provided.

A reminder that hoodies are not permitted and girls who are wearing tights must ensure the tights are opaque.

Ideally, I would like uniform to be a 'non issue' so that we can get on with the important business of educating our students.

ROAD SAFETY

The Yarra Ranges Council have asked that students take particular care whilst using the crossing at John Street, a reminder that students must:

  • Walk along the right hand side of the road and not walk down the middle of the road
  • While students are waiting for the Crossing Supervisor to cross them, they should stand well back from the curb
  • When crossing the road students need to walk in front of the Crossing Supervisor’s. This enables the Supervisor to control the flow
  • When students are crossing the road, please walk briskly

Safety of our students is paramount and adhering to these simple rules is important for the safety of all of our students.

SHOPPING CENTRE PRECINCT

Before and After school

I would like to reiterate the importance of our students travelling directly to and from school.

Students are arriving at school late due to spending time over at the local shopping precinct and, at times, arriving at school and then leaving the premises to visit the shopping area.

I would appreciate everyone’s cooperation in ensuring that students are safe at school, arriving on time, and not loitering around the shopping area unless in the company of a parent or guardian.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

It’s never too late to improve attendance – going to school more often can lead to better outcomes.

Even at Year 9, when attendance rates for all students are lowest, going to school more often can make a big difference.

There are always times when students need to miss school, such as when they’re ill. It’s vital that they’re only away on the days they are genuinely sick, and setting good sleep patterns, eating well and exercising regularly can make a big difference.

Think twice before letting your child have a “day off” as they could fall behind their classmates – every day counts!
