International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT)

LHS SUPPORTS IDAHOT

On Friday 29 May, our school celebrated International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHOT).

Over the course of four weeks, the LHS IDAHOT Committee, comprising students ranging from Years 7-12, met regularly to brainstorm, organise and run the event.

From face-painting to bake sales, from hot-dogs to badges; the Middle School Quadrangle was abuzz with euphoric support and amazing music, provided by the VCE band ‘The Score’ (and assisted by Miss Cumming).

We were also fortunate enough to hear AFL player and Beyond Blue Ambassador Jason Ball speak about his experiences coming out and his passion for bringing a Pride Match to the AFL and the Yarra Valley region.

Blake Wynne, our Humanities Captain and a Year 12 student, originally brought the idea to Miss Higgins and also presented a moving speech on the day.

Through generous donations and purchases made by students and staff, and the funding and assistance from the SRC, run by Mrs Zavrou, we were able to raise over $1000 which will be donated to Beyond Blue and Headspace.

This day can be summarised by the beautiful pledge that was signed by hundreds of students (written by Year 9 student Ashleigh Pope) on a gigantic rainbow flag that was donated by the Hackett family:

“As a Lilydale High School student, and a member of the community, I hereby pledge to recognise and support my friends and fellow peers of all sexualities and genders.

I swear to openly, and unbiasedly, listen to and respect anybody who has the courage to share with me.

Further, I promise to not stand by idly when I am aware of any discrimination or prejudice, and will stand up for my friends and peers from such behaviour.

I will not partake in any use of discriminative language, or actions, as it is unacceptable, and I will encourage others to do the same.

By signing this flag, I recognise that all people, regardless of their gender or sexuality, have a right to feel safe and supported by their school, and their community, and I make the pledge to do all that I can to make this school a safe, secure environment.”

We, as members of the school community, have never been prouder to be teachers, supporters and allies. Well done LHS!
